Buffalo Bills running back Ray Davis has had an incredible journey to reach the NFL, rising from the foster care system to playing professional football. His inspiring story is set to hit the big screen soon. The Hollywood Reporter reported on Monday that a movie titled “Breakaway Ray” will focus on Davis’s life, with Gary Fleder directing the film.
“Crossroad Productions is in development on the inspirational drama movie Breakaway Ray, which has Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury, The Express, Reacher) set to direct from a script by Point Break and Varsity Blues screenwriter W. Peter Iliff, The Hollywood Reporter has learned,” Ryan Gajewski wrote. “Blue Fox Financing is financing the project that has the support of the NFL‘s Buffalo Bills and the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.”
The film will show Davis as he grows up in San Francisco, grappling with poverty due to his mother’s battle with addiction and his father’s absence.
“Breakaway Ray centers on the early years of the athlete who earned a spot in the NFL’s most recent Pro Bowl. The film that is in the works would center on a 9-year-old Davis in San Francisco as he deals with poverty, due to his mother battling addiction and his incarcerated father not being in the picture,” Gajewski added. “After spotting a poster for youth mentoring group Big Brothers Big Sisters, Davis makes a call and is paired with Patrick, a young Google employee who becomes his mentor and must soon navigate Davis’ dad also wanting to be involved in his life.”
It’s always exciting to see a player’s journey make its way to the big screen, and Davis has truly defied the odds on his path to the NFL. Not only is he an outstanding player, but he also serves as a role model for countless young people across the country. It will be fascinating to watch his story come to life on the big screen, and Davis seems pretty excited for it.
“I never would’ve thought in a million years I’d see my story on the big screen, Davis wrote Monday on X. “I’m so grateful to share it on this platform, and this project holds a special place in my heart mentally and emotionally. Beyond excited to see it come to life. All glory to God.”
The Bills drafted Davis in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he has proven to be an outstanding player in his first two seasons. While his offensive stats might not jump off the page — recording only 717 rushing yards in 34 games — it’s his contributions on special teams that truly make him a game changer.
Throughout his career, Davis has recorded 38 kick returns for 1,090 yards, with an impressive 943 yards in 2025 alone. His outstanding performance on special teams this past season was significant enough to earn him a spot as a Pro Bowler.
Davis will play a significant role again this season for the Bills on special teams, and he might even need to step up as a running back to help ease the burden on James Cook.
