Before we begin the new week in earnest, we’re taking a look back at the week that was, and the stories that led the news with Taunton Daily Gazette readers.
Top stories this past week included:
The 2 Jerks BBQ restaurant in Raynham closed because of a norovirus outbreak, according to a Thursday, May 28, town of Raynham public health advisory. A follow-up inspection was planned for Friday, May 29, to determine if the restaurant could reopen on Saturday.
Taunton priest Matt Gill has a side gig. In addition to being the pastor of Holy Family Parish in East Taunton, he is also a musician in the band Vatican III, whose members are all other priests from Catholic churches in Massachusetts.
The City Council denied a special permit to In Good Health, which would have allowed it to relocate its business to the empty retail space at 6 Mozzone Blvd., next door to Starbucks.

There will be a follow-up inspection at the restaurant on Friday, May 29, to determine if the restaurant can reopen on Saturday, May, 30, the public health advisory said.

Taunton priest Matt Gill has a side gig. In addition to being the pastor of Holy Family Parish in East Taunton, he is also a musician in the band Vatican III, whose members are all other priests from Catholic churches in Massachusetts.
Gill plays the bass guitar, and despite studying music in college, he said he was prepared to leave music behind to pursue a religious calling. But it was his father who convinced him to bring his bass to seminary, where he learned he didn’t have to give up his guitar to become a priest.

Now that Berkley voters resoundingly rejected an override that would have raised taxes in order to avoid layoffs and cuts to town services — how will the town close the budget gap?
Berkley Selectmen Chair Tabitha McCrohan said one possible option on the horizon is new commercial development to bring in revenue to stave off further cuts. But that would require zoning changes that voters would also need to approve.

Looks like the Starbucks on the corner of Route 140 and Mozzone Boulevard in Taunton won’t be getting a cannabis dispensary as a neighbor.

First Light Casino Bar Manager Nolan Frye said that the goal for the Taunton casino’s bar is continued growth.
“We’re working on adding more drinks right now, hopefully within the next month or so,” he told the Gazette on Tuesday, May 26. “Hopefully it’ll just keep getting bigger, especially when we expand to the bigger casino.”
The bar at the First Light casino features built-in gaming machines so that patrons can keep playing even while enjoying a drink.
