Writing songs comes as second nature for 20-year-old colby!. She sees it as a foolproof way to channel her creativity into something limitless. Her latest single “Machine” is an example of that exact thing.
The Texas-bred artist has been making music with her older brother RJ Johnson since she was 14, eventually settling on an alt-pop image that she has found extremely cathartic. colby! has also found that her dyslexia has helped shape her songwriting voice, rather than hinder it.
“Machine” begins with an acoustic guitar opening into a gritty, drum-filled production through the last notes. She shares more about the song:
“So it’s a very passive aggressive song, and we love that. I was going for kind of an M.I.A. vibe, and it leans more into the punk sound I’ve been wanting to explore for a while.”
colby! has been named one to watch by Fault and Galore. Her latest releases have included collaborations with other rising pop artists like Eli Wilson, and she will join Natalie John on her European tour in the coming spring.
