Business, economy, and community news from Indian Country
California tribes will receive $60.5 million in state grants for housing and climate projects, with the bulk of the funding directed toward the upfront costs of developing affordable housing.
The California Strategic Growth Council approved the awards Oct. 28 for 40 projects representing 36 tribes. They include the first awards through the Tribal Pre-Development Housing Fund: $52 million for 19 tribal recipients, supporting work expected to lead to 900 new homes.
The fund covers planning, site preparation, infrastructure and other development costs to help tribes prepare housing projects and access additional state affordable housing funding.
The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians received nearly $3 million to advance a 44-unit low-income housing project.
“With this funding, the Tuolumne Band of MeWuk Indians and TEDA, Inc. can fast-track the critical development of our 44-unit low-income housing project,” Darryl Tinkle, president of Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Inc., said in a statement.
Trinidad Rancheria received about $2.35 million. In the statement, Chairman Garth Sundberg said the grant would support planning and predevelopment work for affordable, sustainable housing for tribal members.
Other housing recipients include the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, Berry Creek Rancheria, Big Valley Band of Pomo Indians and Dry Creek Rancheria, each awarded $3 million.
The remaining $8.5 million funds 21 Tribal Capacity Building Program grants to develop housing and climate projects, including climate adaptation planning and traditional ecological knowledge and land management practices.
