MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – It was a beautiful day on the green on Monday at Blackhawk Country Club as current and former Wisconsin natives, athletes and coaches came together for the fourth annual Badger Celebrity Scramble.
Badgers assistant men’s basketball coach Sharif Chambliss, who is heavily involved with the event, said the day began as a way for UW figures to use their platform for something bigger than sports.
“We were figuring out ways on our platform, how we can help people,” Chambliss said. “So we said let’s do a celebrity golf outing, and it’s been absolutely awesome to watch this thing grow.”
Chambliss said the goal Monday was to raise more than $200,000, with proceeds supporting cancer research efforts connected to UW and the Carbone Cancer Center.
“This thing has been sold out, and we have more people donating stuff every year,” he said, adding the money “goes right to the bench” for research.
The outing showcases exactly what many around the program call the Badger family.
“Once you’re a Badger, you’re always a Badger,” Chambliss said. “For us, it’s about pouring into the community, for the same goal.”
Wisconsin football head coach Luke Fickell said events like this are one of the best parts of being at UW.
“That’s what’s awesome about college athletics, everybody is tied together,” Fickell said. “There’s great things that bring you together, learning from each other.”
Wisconsin men’s basketball head coach Greg Gard echoed that sentiment, crediting the Madison community’s generosity.
“The neat thing is the community comes together for one cause,” Gard said. “We should not take it for granted the support that we get and how generous people are.”
Among the several notables taking part on Monday were Fickell, Gard, Wisconsin men’s hockey head coach Mike Hastings, former Badgers standout Johnny Davis, current Badgers forward Nolan Winter, women’s hockey legend Lacey Eden, and Badger football linebackers Cooper Catalano and Mason Posa.
