MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is emerging as a strategic partner of several European countries in recent years.
Cooperation in areas such as security, defense, and trade has picked up amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific. The growing engagement also comes as Manila seeks to expand its defense partnerships beyond its traditional allies.
On Friday, June 19, Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug speaks with analyst Matteo Piasentini about what drives Europe’s interest in the country.
Piasentini is a senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Department of Political Science. He is also an analyst focusing on the China and Indo-Pacific at Italian think tank Geopolitica.
