Looks like Ian Schrager’s PUBLIC Hotel West Hollywood will be staying private for a bit longer. The hotel will not be opening July 15. The hotel’s own reservation system now shows the first available bookings starting September 16.
There was a big splash of attention just last month when they announced the July 15 opening. We brought that to you here.
Seth on the Scene, a West Hollywood Instagram account, flagged it first. The exterior of the building at 8300 Sunset Blvd. didn’t look close to ready. WEHOonline drove past the property just yesterday, Monday and asked the same question. We checked the booking calendar ourselves. Dates from July 15 through September 15 show nightly rates above $2,100 with an 18 day minimum booking. Hotels commonly use inflated placeholder pricing to block out dates that aren’t available. Normal rates kick in September 16, starting at $564 a night.
WEHOonline contacted the PUBLIC Hotels press office for comment. No response was received before publication.
The Standard Hotel operated at 8300 Sunset Blvd. from 1999 until it closed in 2021. The building sat empty for years. The City of West Hollywood looked at whether it qualified for landmark or cultural resource status. Schrager eventually acquired it. He announced PUBLIC West Hollywood in late 2025 with a spring 2026 opening in mind. That slipped to July 15. Now it appears to have slipped again.

The project calls for 137 rooms, three food and entertainment venues, a pool, and a 16,000-square-foot rooftop park. British architect John Pawson is working on the design with Schrager. They originally said room rates start at $495 a night but the website has them starting at $564.
It will be Schrager’s third West Hollywood hotel and the second PUBLIC location, after New York.
