COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) — South Carolina’s Department of Social Services is bringing awareness to different events that the people of South Carolina need to know about.
First off, the state agency recognizes June as Family Reunification Month.
The agency released a statement: acknowledging the hard work and dedication of parents who have overcome challenges to safely reunite with their children. This month emphasizes that reunification is a team effort involving parents, social workers, and advocates. Last year, there were 1,332 children and youth reunited with their families in South Carolina. As of June 1, 2026, 521 children and youth have been safely returned to their families.
Secondly, the state agency is reminding everyone abut the return of the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program.
The program is designed to help supplement the diets of low-income seniors with fresh, nutritious produce while supporting South Carolina's local farmers. This seasonal U.S. Department of Agriculture grant program allows qualifying individuals to purchase unprocessed fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and authorized mobile markets.
This year, eligible participants will receive $50 in the form of five paper checks ($10 each).
Finally, the agency is promoting its World Elder Abuse awareness walk.
It takes place Friday June 12, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the South Carolina Department of Social Services State Office.
Connelly-Anne Ragley with DSS stopped by Good Day Columbia to discuss all these events.
