Elizabeth “Liz” Ann Alsbury, 78, of Shell Lake, WI passed away June 5, 2026
Liz was born on Oct. 4, 1947 in Rushford, MN to Orrin and Marion Zimmerman. After growing up in the St. Charles area, Liz began pursuing an education at Mankato State University. It was there that she would meet her husband, Dan Alsbury. Dan was known to say that Liz had been a “super” cheerleader while he was a “below average” football and wrestling “participant”. He recalled it being a shame that there was not yet much for women’s sports, as they would have found quite an athletic and competitive teammate in Liz.
Liz began her teaching career in Farmington, MN where she taught fourth grade. After marrying on July 18, 1970, Dan and Liz moved to Le Center, MN where Liz continued her career as a fourth-grade teacher. After that, she taught fifth grade in Albert City -Truesdale, IA, while Dan taught in Storm Lake. They settled down in Byron, MN, where they would raise their two children, Nate and Anne. They lived there for 45 years. There she became a very active member in Christ Lutheran Church. Liz and Dan were very involved in meals on wheels and the Byron Food shelf which they enjoyed together.
Throughout her kids’ upbringing, Liz kept her competitive and supportive nature, attending her kids’ games, coaching some herself, and supporting teams that Dan coached as well. Her love for Minnesota sports ran strong, as well as it did for each community, she would eventually call home.
In retirement, Dan and Liz became full-time residents of their lake home in Shell Lake, WI, where she enjoyed another passion of hers – nature. She loved planting flowers, creating butterfly gardens, and spending time on the lake with family. She was quick to make friends in the area, involving herself in volunteer work, numerous book clubs, quilting clubs and Tai Chi.
Her fun, spirited presence will be dearly missed. Liz is survived by her husband of 56 years, Dan; children, Nate (Jenny) Alsbury and Anne (Jake) Davisson; grandchildren, Rachel, Kailey, Lily, Cora, Grayden, and Beckett; and brother and sister-in-law, Terry (Jeri) Zimmerman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orrin and Marion; brother and sister-in-law, Tom (Karen) Zimmerman; parents-in-law, Norman and Edith Alsbury; and sister-in-law, Julie Beimer.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday June 20, 2026. Visitation begins at 11AM and service at Noon at Salem Lutheran Church in Shell Lake, WI. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Celebration of Life in Byron MN will be determined later. Memorials preferred to be donated to Sleep in Heavenly Peace of Chippewa Valley.
