Spencerport, N.Y. — The Law Enforcement Torch Run passed through Monroe County on Friday morning, carrying the Flame of Hope as it travels across New York State to support Special Olympics New York.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the LETR has become a Special Olympics tradition, led by the Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement personnel from agencies across New York.
“Running alongside all these police officers means a lot to us and our fellow athletes,” said Jacob Babcock, Special Olympics athlete. “I’m very excited to run alongside people who I believe in.”
Alongside local athletes and supporters, LETR participants raise vital funds and awareness for Special Olympics New York.
“It’s about inclusion,” said Brett Sobieraski of LETR. “That’s what it’s all about. Everyone should have a chance to compete. This is what Special Olympics does.”
This year’s Rochester Torch Run will honor the recent passing of Retired Lieutenant John Prewasnicak, who dedicated 32 years to the Rochester Police Department and served as a key volunteer with Special Olympics New York.
“I’ve been doing the torch run for the last 15 years and it was Lieutenant John Prewasnicak who got me involved in this,” Sobieraski said.
Over 100 local law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes participated in the event and honored Lt. Prewasnicak.
