Grundium announced it has acquired Visiopharm to create an integrated precision pathology platform that combines digital slide scanning with AI-driven pathology software.
The transaction marks a major step in Grundium’s strategy to build a broader digital and computational pathology platform. Backed by EW Healthcare Partners, Grundium said the combined business will bring together its imaging technology with Visiopharm’s AI-driven precision pathology software to create an end-to-end solution for diagnostic laboratories, biopharmaceutical development, and research organizations.
The companies said the platform is intended to help physicians, researchers, and laboratories improve biomarker assessment accuracy while addressing rising workloads and operational complexity in precision diagnostics. By combining compact digital pathology scanners with AI-powered pathology applications, the platform is expected to support more scalable and cost-effective digital pathology workflows.
The combined offering will support a range of applications, including laboratory workflows, enterprise-scale deployments, biomarker development, translational research, clinical studies, and companion diagnostic programs.
Grundium and Visiopharm had collaborated on integrating their technologies for laboratory customers prior to the acquisition. Both companies said existing customers and partners will continue to receive support for their current products independently while also having the option to integrate the combined capabilities over time.
Grundium, founded in 2015 by former Nokia engineers, develops compact digital pathology scanners used across healthcare, education, and research. The Finland-based company said its imaging technology is built on more than two decades of expertise in optics, sensors, and precision device engineering.
Founded in 2002, Denmark-based Visiopharm develops AI-driven precision pathology software for research, diagnostics, and biopharmaceutical services. The company said it currently serves more than 750 customer accounts across more than 40 countries and has nine diagnostic algorithms cleared under the IVDR for customers in the European Union and the United Kingdom.
EW Healthcare Partners said the acquisition advances its original investment thesis around building a differentiated digital pathology platform that combines imaging and AI-powered pathology analysis.
The companies also emphasized the broader impact of digital pathology on healthcare, particularly in oncology, where AI-enhanced diagnostic workflows could improve diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and global access to expert pathology services.
