Tanzania continues to elevate its international standing through strategic diplomatic appointments and leadership roles in key regional and global organizations, firmly establishing itself as an influential player on the world stage.
Tanzania’s diplomatic influence has grown significantly in recent years, with the nation securing multiple high-profile leadership positions in international organizations. This strategic ascendance reflects a deliberate approach to foreign policy that has positioned the East African nation as an increasingly important voice in global affairs.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, James Millya, highlighted these achievements yesterday during the Ministry Workers’ Council meeting in Dodoma. According to Millya, Tanzania’s rising global profile stems directly from concerted diplomatic efforts guided by the country’s recently updated 2001 Foreign Policy, 2024 Edition.
Among the notable diplomatic victories, Millya pointed to former President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete’s appointment as African Union High-Level Representative for the Horn of Africa and Red Sea, a strategically critical region facing complex security and political challenges. Additionally, Tanzania secured the position of African Union Deputy Chairperson, further cementing its continental influence.
The appointment of Ambassador Stephen Patrick Mbundi as Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) represents another significant achievement, giving Tanzania direct leadership in the regional economic bloc that encompasses over 300 million people across seven member states.
“These achievements reflect the strengthening of Tanzania’s image, reputation and influence in international affairs,” Millya stated during his address.
Beyond leadership positions, Tanzania has intensified its focus on economic diplomacy, working to attract investment, technology transfer, financing opportunities, and expanded trade relationships. This approach aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s broader economic revitalization agenda, which seeks to position Tanzania as a key investment destination in East Africa.
On the global stage, Tanzania remains actively engaged in addressing pressing challenges including climate change, environmental conservation, clean energy transitions, transnational crime, and public health emergencies. The nation has also prioritized protecting its citizens abroad, including facilitating evacuations from conflict zones.
Regionally, Tanzania maintains active participation in multiple organizations, including the East African Community (EAC), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA). The country’s commitment to these bodies involves implementing key protocols and programs designed to enhance regional integration and cooperation.
“The Ministry has continued to fully coordinate and participate in supporting the efforts of the African Union and the United Nations to find solutions to conflicts through diplomatic means,” Millya noted, highlighting Tanzania’s ongoing contributions to peacekeeping and conflict resolution across Africa.
Despite these successes, Tanzania faces notable challenges in its regional and international endeavors. Millya cited delays by member states in honoring regional agreements and financial contributions, sluggish private sector engagement in economic diplomacy initiatives, and escalating global security tensions that hamper integration efforts.
To address these obstacles, the Tanzanian government has enhanced diplomatic engagement and public diplomacy, advocating for community-level sanctions to ensure timely budget contributions while supporting reforms to streamline contribution regulations. The Foreign Affairs Ministry has also embraced digital communication platforms and social media to increase public awareness and adapt to evolving international dynamics.
As Tanzania continues to expand its global footprint, Millya urged ministry personnel to maintain high standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism while aligning future planning with the country’s Development Vision 2050 framework.
