Update: Goomba things come to those who wait
Update []: You might have read reports last week that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie would be arriving as a paid digital download on 5th May. Well, today’s the day, and it looks like those predictions were perhaps a little optimistic.
Last week’s report stemmed from When To Stream — an outlet that is usually accurate with its release date news — and, admittedly, worked nicely with Universal’s theatrical exclusivity deal. However, the outlet has since updated its prediction.
According to When To Stream’s sources, the movie will actually arrive on VOD platforms on 19th May, giving it a whopping seven-weekend run in cinemas before arriving at home.
Once again, Nintendo and Universal have yet to confirm or deny this new date, so take everything with a pinch of salt for the time being. Also remember that, much like The Sumer Mario Bros. Movie, there’s every chance that the film will release digitally in North America before it arrives in Europe.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for the official word from Nintendo and Universal, and will update you all as soon as we have it.
Original Story: Despite putting up a staggering run at the box office, it looks like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might be heading for a video on demand release even quicker than its predecessor.
As reported by When to Stream (and brought to our attention by Forbes), the Mario Galaxy Movie will apparently arrive as a paid digital stream on 5th May — that’s a mere five weekends since it launched in cinemas at the beginning of April. While the outlet is often accurate with its VOD release dates, neither Universal nor Nintendo have made an official announcement at the time of writing.
The window fits within Universal’s new five-week theatrical exclusivity promise (which’ll extend to seven weeks in 2027), though The Super Mario Bros. Movie hung around exclusively in cinemas for six weeks back in 2023 as it continued to break box office records.
The Galaxy Movie’s UHD digital release is now available to pre-order on Amazon for $29.99, though, of course, the storefront doesn’t confirm the release date at the time of writing.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for the official word on the Mario Galaxy Movie’s VOD release date in the coming days.
Just last week, the Mario Galaxy Movie surpassed $747.4 million at the global box office, pushing the two films’ total earnings across the $2 billion mark. A digital release will keep those dollars rolling in for the foreseeable future, so don’t be surprised to see it stick around on the ‘highest-grossing’ lists at the end of the year.

About Jim Norman![]()
Jim came to Nintendo Life in 2022 and, despite his insistence that The Minish Cap is the best Zelda game and his unwavering love for the Star Wars prequels (yes, really), he has continued to write news and features on the site ever since.

Surely the physical release won’t be but a month or so after. I literally just preordered my 4k copy yesterday. I’m looking forward to seeing this again. My first time watching was weighted down by a lot of work stuff going on at the time and I wasn’t able to fully enjoy the movie so I’m excited to give it another watch.![]()
Happy for those interested in watching the movie this way if confirmed – personally, I’m waiting for the physical release to then eventually rewatch it (and I should get the Japanese versions of both this and the first movie when I can to finally check those out, too)!
$30 seems very steep for a digital download. I'd expect to get the Blu-ray for that price.![]()
insert Game-key card joke here![]()
What wild is it's already leaving theaters![]()
I’ll be waiting to see the Mario Galaxy movie when it’s streaming free on Peacock.![]()
Cool, the movie is out of this world!
I’m buying the Blu-Ray combo pack because I’d rather have a physical copy.![]()
I will try to watch again for TEN times at my local cinema XXI before 5 May 2026, then mission accomplished.
Should be 19.99 not 29.99![]()
I’ll get it physically instead and watch it digitally from the physical copies. If gaming did that, I’d be buying PS5 disks for my digital console! 😂![]()
Seems soon, but maybe their hope is people see the $29.99 price and decide to go see it in a theater instead.😂
I'll probably wait until my library has a copy on the shelf like I did with the first movie. Going to pick up Days of Future Past again this week b/c the library has the Rogue cut but Disney+ doesn't.
Nintendo needs to release the movies on Switch carts. It would be so fun! As a physical media dork, I need it. If they feel "bad" about not having a game on the cart, throw the original Super Mario All-Stars on there.
And they wonder why cinemas are dying![]()
Seems like the current standard, the films comes early on streaming services and just gets cheaper as time goes by.
I’m surprised Nintendo won’t let us buy and play them on the actual Nintendo switch.![]()
Nice, the sooner the better since I can't go to the theater anymore. I always need to wait for the home release.
@GoproGO The movie is on track for crossing 1 billion dollars. There have been multiple block buster hits in the past couple months.
@coolioam That doesn't change facts that cinemas are dying
@GoproGO Numbers prove otherwise. Maybe cinema is dying for smaller films, but these block busters are keeping it alive.
@coolioam Obviously they're not completely gonna die, there's always gonna be a demand for them. But they're getting smaller, there's a lot less of them, attendance is massively down from 7 years ago. Stuff like this doesn't help, telling people "Don't worry, even the biggest film of the year will only be in the cinema for 5-6 weeks before you can watch it at home". It's just gonna become more and more of a niche thing![]()
Count me in for wanting Nintendo to release the movies on Switch carts or at least digitally.![]()
@rjejr $29.99 for unlimited viewing is cheaper than seeing it in the theater, I’ve seen it multiple times with my husband and it’s often $30-$40 a visit when we go.
Tickets can be $15-$20 each, we’ve gone to AMC theaters but also other local theaters and the story is mostly the same. The lowest ticket price was a local theater with a bad screen for $11 each.
If you’re a family with a kid or two… the VOD works out instantly. And you don’t have to take time (or gas) to travel.![]()
@HammerGalladeBro Once upon a time Nintendo said 3D movies were coming to the 3DS (it ended up being a couple short videos on the eshop)
I bought the original super Mario bros movie on YouTube VOD/Google Play initially (the same earliest release) which allowed me to watch it on my switch thru the youtube app! That would work again this time, but not on switch 2 which… isn't compatible with YouTube oddly.![]()
@spottedleaf Nice, good to know you can do that. Unfortunately for me, Google has blocked my main email for payments for no reason. This is also why I haven’t bought Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Complete.
If they cannot be arsed to sort it out, I’d rather miss on what they offer in general.
About movies on the 3DS, I remember Japan got Big Hero 6 and I believe Up! (maybe it was something else, don’t quote me on Up!) as downloads for the 3DS. I remember seeing Big Hero 6 advertised on NCL’s website.![]()
@HammerGalladeBro They got Lego Movie and Wreck it Ralph too on 3ds![]()
Well, I've already preordered the Blu-Ray version, and it will come with a digital copy, so I will wait until then. I think the other movies that I have seen this year and am waiting to see come to digital are Umamusume: Beginning of a New Era and Iron Lung.
just a month? what was the whole point of whole year marketing to see this movie in cinemas?![]()
I was going to buy it on cartridge but I guess I'll download it from the eshop now![]()
This new date would make more sense and luckily it isn't too much of an additional wait (while of course having the positive of letting the movie stay exclusively in cinemas for longer for their sake) – anyway, hope those watching the movie whenever it becomes available also in this way and then eventually other ones as well have fun!![]()
7 weeks isn't bad at all, try waiting half a year like I am for Demon Slayer Infinity Castle.![]()
Much like the “Sumer Mario Bros Movie…”
Honestly, I’d like to see that typo as a movie. Would be a wild one.![]()
Where I am the theatrical run finishes on the 7th.
think you meant to say super and not sumer for The Sumer Mario Bros. Movie lol
its not much longer either way, plus gives people more time to see it in the cinema![]()
Give it a bit more time to get to the billion dollar mark hopefully.
It is out today, the torrent sites have it and so does itunes…
I be honest this is most let down of mario.galaxy I know it make money because mario is biggest IP. But just because it has good animation and references doesnt mean quality is there story is rushed the characters are one dimensional and dont say "its kids film or its mario doesnt need to be complex" miyamoto stupid excuse making it fast pace because let's dumb kids making the brainrot cocomelon instead challenging children with well told stories if Sonic can deliver why can't mario.
I have no hype for next mario they already spit on Rosalina fans gave her little screen and changed backstory made her one dimensional. But add Fox Mccloud because why not. They gonna ruin Daisy next.
NICE definitely picking this up day one
