Online Votes Can Help Avondale Sixth Grader Win Doodle for Google Contest
(Google, April 18, 2026)
Rochester Hills, MI – Lerui Zheng, a sixth grader at Avondale GATE Middle School in Rochester Hills, was just announced as one of five national finalists in the annual Doodle for Google contest. From now through April 29th, the public can vote for their favorite Doodle to determine the National Winner.
If his is selected, his college scholarship would be increased from $10,000 to $55,000.  Also, the win would bring a $50,000 technology grant to his school, providing critical resources for local students.
Lerui’s piece, “Turning Brass into Happiness,” will be featured on the Google homepage as part of a revolving gallery on April 28th.
Doodle for Google is an annual art contest for U.S. K-12 students.  Participants are encouraged to use their creativity to create their very own “Doodle” or interpretation of the Google logo. For 2025 – 2026, the theme is “My superpower is…”.  Students were invited to celebrate their unique strengths and express them through original art.
Lerui’s description of his piece was “My superpower is creating harmony with brass instruments. I want people to find happiness and joy through music. The French horn, trombone, trumpet, sousaphone, and tuba make the music in the air feel golden. The symphony created by the instruments will make people relaxed and hopeful. My power can make music bring happiness and joy around the world.”
