Hawaii County prosecutors have a 43-year-old Captain Cook man with multiple felonies after he allegedly barricaded himself inside a home with his 2-year-old daughter and held off police for hours.
Earl-Lewis Camacho was charged Friday with kidnapping, carrying or use of firearm in the commission of a separate felony; felony abuse of a family or household member (which involves abuse in the presence of a minor); two counts of misdemeanor abuse of a family or household member; two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening; three counts of ownership or possession of prohibited firearm; and ownership or possession of prohibited ammunition, according to prosecutors. The latter two charges are based on the suspect having prior felony convictions.
According to Hawaii police, at about 8:35 p.m. Tuesday, officers responded to reports of a domestic dispute involving Camacho and his 25-year-old girlfriend on the 85-4000 block of Hawaii Belt Road in Captain Cook. Officers were told that Camacho had assaulted the woman and was armed with a firearm while holding their 2-year-old daughter.
Officers saw Camacho carrying the child and what appeared to be a rifle. Camacho refused officers’ commands and barricaded himself inside the home, police said. He repeatedly yelled at officers to shoot him and was seen pointing what appeared to be three different firearms at officers and at the child he was holding, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The department’s Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded and worked for several hours to peacefully resolve the situation, police said. Shortly before midnight, Camacho voluntarily exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
The 2-year-old child was unharmed and reunited with her mother.

Officers later recovered three rifles, a Winchester .22 Magnum rifle, a Marlin Firearms Co. .22 caliber rifle, and a Stevens Model 325-C rifle, and ammunition.
Prosecutors said that Camacho did not make his scheduled initial appearance in Kona District Court on Friday afternoon because he remained at Kona Community Hospital for observation.
The District Court set bail at $711,000, and rescheduled the arraignment hearing for Tuesday. Prosecutors have filed a motion requesting to detain Camacho without bail.
The most serious offenses that Camacho faces — kidnapping and carrying or use of firearm in the commission of a separate felony — are both class A felonies and carry a penalty of a 20-year prison term, according to a county news release.
