The latest season serves <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a reminder for audiences to lean into the fun and enjoy some semi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unserious, drama<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filled entertainment while also successfully engaging in very unexpected topics like societal class structures.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenny Han<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creator and executive producer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the show, known for also creating \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Summer I Turned Pretty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and \u201cT<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o All the Boys I\u2019ve Loved Before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d has given us yet another marvelous gift in the form of \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The show, unlike the previous source material, is not an adaptation from one of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Han<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s books, but rather an entirely new creation. Season <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specifically features technical television mastery, an engaging plot and valuable lessons to learn from.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show is a spinoff from the \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To All the Boys I\u2019ve Loved Before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d centering around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lara Jean<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lana Condor<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) younger sister, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Cathcart<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), who attends a boarding school in South Korea for her junior and senior years of high school. The first and second seasons were split by her first and second semester at the Korean Independent School of Seoul (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KISS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The third season follows <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s senior year, as she learns to navigate friendships, plans for the future and finally clarifies her romantic relationship with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Min Ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sang Heon Lee<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) which has been slowly building for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seasons.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The relationships between the characters in \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d are complicated to say the least, with much overlap and drama. It can admittedly be confusing for the audience to follow at times. But the interwoven romantic plots allow the audience to stay connected to the large ensemble cast.<\/span><br \/><a style=\"color: #c9c8cd; font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWpB1uhjbha\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A post shared by Swooon (@swooondotcom)<\/a><br \/><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> creates what she calls her \u201cSenior <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unset <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ist,\u201d where she outlines all the things she wants to do before her senior year ends. The bright, colorful and fun aesthetic of the show pairs perfectly with an upbeat and playful soundtrack. It features masterful original scores by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jina Hyojin An<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shirley Song<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, K-pop hits like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aespa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whiplash<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and throwbacks from \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To All the Boys I\u2019ve Loved Before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fletcher<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Fire Again<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brilliant camera choice of employing an extremely shallow depth of field throughout most of the shots effectively conveyed the relatability of characters, enhanced through the heartwarming performances of the actors. This sense of closeness to the characters is only intensified through the utterly embarrassing moments that the audience has to witness. For example, the audience is witness to all the mistakes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes while maneuvering through this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other world\u201d that is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Min Ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s rich, glamorous and famous lifestyle.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, <\/span>despite <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the pure whimsical nature of \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d the show addresses class relations as one of the main cruxes of the plot. In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Min Ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s relationship, the difference in class puts a strain on the couple. This season, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Min Ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> navigates being a manager for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eunice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryu Han-bi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) budding K-Pop career, under the guidance of his famous father <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young Moon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philippe<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lee<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s friend and former love interest\/gay-awakening <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yuri<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gia Kim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) financially finds herself in her own troubles after her family lost all of their money in a lawsuit. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yuri<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learns to rely on herself, not her nepotism, and work hard to earn what she wants. Her hard work and talent eventually pays off and ends with her winning Seoul Fashion Week\u2019s Designer Break<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hrough Contest. Her work was titled \u201cRiches to Rags\u201d and featured <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and her friends as runway models. So, unfortunately, even \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is not safe from neoliberal economic beliefs of \u201cpulling yourself up by your bootstraps.\u201d But <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yuri<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at least learns it is a waste of time to try to appeal to the stuck<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up upper class, and focuses on her own passions and aspirations.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show also delves into the exploitative nature that comes along with stardom and fame through the character of Eunice. Her rise to fame as a K-pop artist led her to live with extreme anxiety that caused a decline in her mental health. Eunice realizes she does not want a life of riches and fame, but something quieter and simpler, and takes a step back from her budding K-Pop career, to the chagrin of Min Ho\u2019s father<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Young Moon advises Min Ho to force her to stick to her contract, but Min Ho, looking out for Eunice&#8217;s best interests, lets her go. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with all of the fanciful ridiculousness the show has to offer, easily the most unrealistic plot point was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s acceptance into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York University<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who throughout the show had been struggling endlessly with her academics.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The season ends on somewhat of a cliff-hanger, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Min Ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> boarding a plane heading back to Portland, mimicking the ending of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eason 1, but in very different circumstances this time around. And while the future in many ways remains uncertain for them both, they know they want each other to be in it.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Jenny Han<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s work, there is always a theme of a character \u2018not belonging\u2019 or trying to fit into a world seemingly not made for them. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d shows viewers that through a support group full of loving friends and family, taking on that challenge is not impossible. And through \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d ideas of class struggles become mainstreamed in a way that I hope will make audiences more aware of these issues. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">XO, Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is effective on all fronts, addressing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0some hard hitting issues while remaining purely fanciful, playful and entertaining and shows a heartwarming portrayal of self-discovery.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If audiences take anything to heart from the season besides class consciousness, it should be to remember that, as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kitty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are brilliant and so strong.
