{"id":9620,"date":"2026-04-16T16:31:04","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T16:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/16\/autism-not-linked-to-tylenol-use-in-pregnancy-researchers-say-usa-today\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T16:31:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T16:31:04","slug":"autism-not-linked-to-tylenol-use-in-pregnancy-researchers-say-usa-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/16\/autism-not-linked-to-tylenol-use-in-pregnancy-researchers-say-usa-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Autism not linked to Tylenol use in pregnancy, researchers say &#8211; USA Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The use of\u00a0Tylenol\u00a0by women during pregnancy was not associated with autism in their children, according to results of a nationwide study in Denmark published on Monday.<br \/>Among more than 1.5 million children born between 1997 and 2022, including 31,098 exposed to\u00a0Tylenol\u00a0in the womb, autism was later diagnosed in 1.8% of exposed children and 3% of the unexposed group, Danish researchers reported in\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2847695 target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JAMA Pediatrics<\/a>.<br \/>The lack of an association persisted after researchers accounted for individual risk factors including the dose of the drug and the trimester of pregnancy in which it was used, the report said.<br \/>A\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2817406 target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Swedish study<\/a>\u00a0also found no link between autism and pregnancy use of\u00a0Tylenol, a brand name for acetaminophen and paracetamol.<br \/>A\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12940-025-01208-0 target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 review<\/a>\u00a0by U.S. researchers of 46 earlier studies did suggest a possible link between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, but the researchers said the study does not prove the drug caused those conditions. They advised that pregnant women should continue to use acetaminophen as needed, at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest possible period.<br \/>In September, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it was initiating the process for a label change for acetaminophen to warn that its use by pregnant women may be associated with an increased risk of autism and ADHD.<br \/>At the time of the FDA announcement, U.S. President\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/donald-trump\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0said pregnant women and infants\u00a0should not take the drug\u00a0because of its link with autism.<br \/>Since then, national and international medical groups have\u00a0decried the president&#8217;s comments, saying they were\u00a0not evidence-based.<br \/>A month after the FDA said it would recommend limiting\u00a0Tylenol\u00a0use in pregnancy, U.S. Health Secretary <a target=_blank href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/politics\/robert-f-kennedy-jr\/ data-autotag=1eef402e-8d6b-4ca9-ae4b-46a1674522c3>Robert F.
