Tom Peila with Simplot Western Stockmen\u2019s says this time of year is especially demanding because producers are effectively feeding multiple animals at once.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really feeding three head of cattle\u2026 the cow, the calf on the ground, and the one coming,\u201d Peila explained. <\/p>\n

That added demand makes it critical to keep cows in proper body condition and ensure they\u2019re receiving adequate nutrition\u2014especially protein\u2014to stay on track reproductively.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to keep that cow on time, we\u2019ve got to be breeding\u2026 especially these young cows\u2014they\u2019re just worth too much money. We can\u2019t have them fall out of the herd,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Peila notes that many producers are also looking for ways to simplify their feeding programs while dealing with ongoing labor challenges. Products like protein and mineral blocks are becoming increasingly popular because they save time and improve efficiency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look at trying to save labor\u2026 we need to do things convenient that save guys labor because there just isn\u2019t enough of it out there,\u201d Paila said. <\/p>\n
