{"id":8796,"date":"2026-04-13T06:15:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T06:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/13\/trumps-strait-of-hormuz-blockade-risks-new-costs-for-the-global-economy-the-conversation\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T06:15:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T06:15:02","slug":"trumps-strait-of-hormuz-blockade-risks-new-costs-for-the-global-economy-the-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/13\/trumps-strait-of-hormuz-blockade-risks-new-costs-for-the-global-economy-the-conversation\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Strait of Hormuz blockade risks new costs for the global economy &#8211; The Conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Share article<br \/>Print article<br \/>For weeks now, the world economy has been on tenterhooks, waiting for one outcome: <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/what-will-it-take-to-get-ships-going-through-the-strait-of-hormuz-again-280275\">reopening the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>.<br \/>In response to war with Israel and the United States, Iran has effectively closed the narrow waterway, through which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c78n6p09pzno\">about a fifth<\/a> of the world\u2019s oil and gas normally passes. <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-09\/is-the-strait-of-hormuz-open-oil-ships-iran-war\/106542010\">Some ships<\/a> have passed through the strait during the war, but largely on Iran\u2019s terms, including by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-01\/strait-of-hormuz-ships-paying-iran-yuan-and-crypto-tolls-for-safe-passage\">reportedly paying tolls<\/a> for safe passage. <br \/>Opening the strait back up to all shipping traffic was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c3w39lg84w2o\">key condition<\/a> of the two-week ceasefire agreed to last week. But after \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/11\/world\/live-news\/iran-us-war-talks\">marathon<\/a>\u201d talks between the US and Iran failed to result in a deal on the weekend, US President Donald Trump used a Truth Social post to <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116392448970133700\">announce<\/a> a major escalation:<br \/>Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.<br \/>US Central Command <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PRESS-RELEASES\/Press-Release-View\/Article\/4457255\/us-to-blockade-ships-entering-or-exiting-iranian-ports\/\">later confirmed<\/a> a blockade on all Iranian ports would begin on April 13 at 10am eastern time in the US. <br \/>The idea is to put severe pressure on the Iranian economy by restricting its exports, and force the country to allow all shipping through. But Iran \u2013 a major exporter of oil and gas \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mb_ghalibaf\/status\/2043425869570416802\">warned<\/a> the global economy would pay.<br \/>So, under pressure to get oil and gas flowing again, why is the US blockading the Strait of Hormuz? What impacts could this have on the world? <br \/>   <em>     <strong>       Read more:       <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/would-a-us-blockade-of-the-strait-of-hormuz-be-legal-280446\">Would a US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz be legal?<\/a>     <\/strong>   <\/em> <br \/>According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Iran produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/oil-market-report-march-2026\">3.59 million barrels<\/a> of crude oil per day in February (before war broke out). <br \/>In 2025, global crude oil demand was about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/271823\/global-crude-oil-demand\">105 million barrels per day<\/a>. That means Iran\u2019s production accounts for about 3.5% of global demand \u2013 significant enough to influence global oil economy.<br \/>Iran\u2019s economy is overwhelmingly dependent on oil and gas, especially crude oil, which accounted for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gisreportsonline.com\/r\/iran-oil-market-influence\/\">57%<\/a> of the country\u2019s total export revenue in 2024.<br \/>China is the main buyer, receiving about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/35945\/countries-that-buy-oil-from-iran\/\">90%<\/a> of Iran\u2019s oil exports in 2024. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/35945\/countries-that-buy-oil-from-iran\/\">Other buyers<\/a> include Syria (3.3%) and UAE (2%). Iraq, Turkey, Malaysia, and Oman bought less than 1% of Iranian oil exports.<br \/>Iran also exports petrochemicals products, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/iran-import-export-guide-2025-trade-atlas-gmbh-7us4f\/\">methanol, urea, polyethylene and ammonia<\/a>. <br \/>US Central Command has announced the blockade will target all vessels entering or departing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/PRESS-RELEASES\/Press-Release-View\/Article\/4457255\/us-to-blockade-ships-entering-or-exiting-iranian-ports\/\">Iranian ports and coastal areas<\/a>. <br \/>Iran has <a href=\"http:\/\/dolphinmarineservices.de\/specification.html\">11 major ports<\/a>. Eight of them are in the Southern region in Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman regions and three in the Caspian Sea (North) for regional trade. <br \/>Iranian ports located in these regions are set to be impacted by the targeted blockade. This includes the port in Kharg Island that handles about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/features\/2026\/3\/11\/the-orphan-pearl-inside-kharg-the-beating-heart-of-irans-oil-empire\">90% of the country\u2019s crude exports<\/a>. <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-13\/strait-of-hormuz-blockade-will-cut-off-irans-ports\/106557690\">Oil prices rose<\/a> again on the news, having fallen when a ceasefire was announced last week. <br \/>Trump isn\u2019t planning a permanent blockade. As he stated in his Truth Social <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116392448970133700\">post<\/a> announcing the the move:<br \/>At some point, we will reach an \u201cALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT\u201d basis but Iran has not allowed that to happen [\u2026] No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas.<br \/>But it\u2019s difficult to predict how long a blockade would last, how successful it would be, and the extent to which shipping would be affected. <br \/>China will be impacted first, as the main buyer of Iran\u2019s crude oil. The knock-on effects may create a chronic shortage of oil and contribute to higher oil prices in the global market.<br \/>Adding to this, many Gulf countries typically import key materials and food products from Iran. For example, in 2022, the <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/iran\/exports\/united-arab-emirates\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> imported mineral fuels, oils, distillation products, organic chemicals, iron and steel, copper and fertilisers from Iran. <br \/>Oman and Qatar also import key materials and food products, such as steel, iron, construction materials, petrochemicals, agricultural products, and fruits.<br \/>Urea, a crucial fertiliser used for farming, deserves a special mention. Iran is a major producer of urea and is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifpri.org\/blog\/the-iran-wars-impacts-on-global-fertilizer-markets-and-food-production\/\">largest exporter<\/a> in the Gulf region.<br \/>Farmers around the world are <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/winter-crops-need-to-be-sown-but-australias-farmers-are-worried-about-fertilisers-and-fuel-279105\">already under pressure<\/a> as the conflict puts severe strain on global fertiliser supplies. <br \/>Even if they don\u2019t get fertiliser from Iran directly, countries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifpri.org\/blog\/the-iran-wars-impacts-on-global-fertilizer-markets-and-food-production\/\">Brazil, India, and Australia<\/a> could be impacted from the flow-on effects of disruption to the fertiliser supply chain. <br \/>After failed peace talks, Trump says he is moving to stop Iran\u2019s \u201cworld extortion\u201d \u2013 referring primarily to charging ships for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
