Both the United States and Iran hailed the step as a victory. Yet disagreements remain, as Israel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2026\/4\/8\/netanyahu-says-us-iran-ceasefire-does-not-include-lebanon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refuted<\/a> Pakistan\u2019s claim that Lebanon was included in the agreement. U.S. Vice President JD Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-08-2026#0000019d-6c84-d6fa-a5fd-ecde46890000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">called<\/a> the truce \u201cfragile\u201d today as some attacks continued in the region\u2014while leaders from <a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20260408\/0b46b6337bd34f309663e3f1b9b2d9e4\/c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/08\/european-leaders-welcome-us-iran-ceasefire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Europe<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-08-2026#0000019d-6bdd-d1f7-a9bf-6bdfeffd0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Africa<\/a> praised the announcement. Whether the temporary ceasefire will lead to a lasting peace settlement remains to be seen. Pakistan <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CMShehbaz\/status\/2041665043423752651?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">invited<\/a> the United States and Iran to begin negotiations on Friday in Islamabad.<\/span><br \/><span><strong>Victory lap.<\/strong> \u201cA big day for World Peace!\u201d U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116367088879643074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proclaimed<\/a> this morning. Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2041649076500869158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> last night that Washington had \u201calready met and exceeded all military objectives\u201d in the war and that a ten-point proposal from Iran was a workable starting point for negotiations. Iranian state media <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/07\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-trump-us-israel?post-id=cmnp8b6kb0001356sct0yez8e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> a version of that proposal, though a White House social media account <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RapidResponse47\/status\/2041674967188738492?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">disputed<\/a> reporting on the proposal. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/araghchi\/status\/2041655156215799821\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> passage through the Strait of Hormuz during the truce will be ensured in conjunction with the Iranian military. The United States \u201cwill be helping with the traffic buildup\u201d in the vital waterway, Trump said. As of this morning, traffic through the strait <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/08\/world\/middleeast\/strait-hormuz-ships-traffic-iran-ceasefire.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">had not increased<\/a> on a large scale. In additional social media posts, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/116368825638596650\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> Washington would work with Tehran to \u201cdig up and remove\u201d nuclear particles and discuss tariff and sanctions relief; he also <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/116368854361048135\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threatened<\/a> 50 percent tariffs on countries supplying Iran with weapons.<\/span><br \/><span><strong>On the battlefield. <\/strong>Despite the agreement, an Iranian oil refinery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/iranian-oil-refining-company-confirms-attack-lavan-refinery-shana-reports-2026-04-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was struck<\/a> in the hours after the truce announcement, and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-08-2026#0000019d-6c7e-deed-adbd-feff99b80000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kuwait<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-war-israel-trump-04-08-2026#0000019d-6c7c-d466-ab9f-7c7fa9c80000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United Arab Emirates<\/a> also reported airstrikes. In Lebanon, Hezbollah paused its attacks on Israel, unnamed sources close to the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/hezbollah-pauses-attacks-under-us-iran-ceasefire-sources-close-group-say-2026-04-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">told<\/a> Reuters, though Israel\u2019s military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/israel-security\/2026-04-08\/ty-article-live\/mda-three-children-lightly-injured-in-negev-following-iranian-rocket-fire\/0000019d-6ad1-d940-a5bd-fedf1e030000?liveBlogItemId=686246611#686246611\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> it struck one hundred targets across Lebanon today. Thousands of U.S. troops remain deployed in the region, and U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/live\/c5yw4g3z7qgt?post=asset%3A3e798ae7-f26a-4db8-89f2-8d2d5263ce85#post\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> U.S. forces \u201cstand ready, if ordered or called upon, to resume combat operations.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span><strong>Market moves. <\/strong>Oil futures <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/07\/markets\/us-stocks-oil-trump-iran-ceasefire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dropped<\/a> and stock markets rose in response to the ceasefire announcement. Hours before the truce\u2014when Trump\u2019s threat of civilizational destruction still hung in the air\u2014a key oil benchmark had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-07\/key-real-world-oil-price-soars-to-highest-level-on-record\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surged<\/a> to its highest level on record. Yet the head of the International Air Transport Association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/iata-chief-says-jet-fuel-supply-could-take-months-recover-after-hormuz-reopening-2026-04-08\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">warned<\/a> today that it could take months to reverse the war\u2019s impact on jet fuel supply even if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.<\/span><br \/><span><em>\u201cThis is an agreement to begin to talk\u2026A ceasefire is better than no ceasefire. It\u2019s good for the bombing to stop.
