\t\t\t\t\t\tEven if one were inclined to laugh off the weird propaganda touted by the White House\u2019s app, cybersecurity concerns are tougher to overlook.\t\t\t\t\t
By objective measures, Donald Trump\u2019s standing has reached depths unseen since Jan. 6, 2021. The president\u2019s approval rating has reached embarrassing lows; the war he started in Iran isn\u2019t exactly going according to plan; he\u2019s alienated U.S. allies around the globe; and to the extent that he has a legislative agenda, the Congress led by his fellow Republicans isn\u2019t advancing it.
On the other hand, those who rely on the White House\u2019s mobile \u201cnews\u201d app, which was launched<\/a> two weeks ago, have a very different impression about current events.
The app, according to Team Trump, intends to offer Americans \u201ca direct line to the White House \u2014 cutting through the noise with unfiltered, real-time updates straight from the source.\u201d As The Washington Post noted<\/a>, the result is an online service that offers \u201ca glimpse into a world in which only Trump\u2019s triumphs make headlines.\u201d
\u2018AMERICA IS BACK,\u2019 reads an all-caps headline that dominates the app\u2019s home screen. Top stories trumpet the president\u2019s \u2018policy wins,\u2019 track the decline in egg prices, and hail a \u2018historic turnaround on immigration,\u2019 with more people leaving the United States than entering it in 2025. […]
\u2018Welcome to the golden age!\u2019 declares a pop-up screen inviting users to provide their email address to receive news and updates. Another prompt directs users to enable push notifications so they can receive \u2018breaking news alerts.\u2019 A red button invites them to \u2018text President Trump\u2019; tapping it pulls up a pre-drafted text message that begins, \u2018Greatest President Ever!\u2019
While all of this might sound absurd, and more than a little embarrassing for ostensible adults serving in the executive branch of the world\u2019s preeminent superpower, the launch has apparently had some success: The Post\u2019s report noted that the app was downloaded roughly 700,000 times in its first week, and it \u201ctopped Apple and Google\u2019s download charts in the news category.\u201d
We can probably think of many examples of conservative news outlets that have the qualities<\/em> of state media, but the White House is taking matters one step further, creating a literal<\/em> online state media app \u2014 and there\u2019s apparently a market for such propaganda.
But while part of the problem for those who rely on the app is that they\u2019ll be uninformed about key events \u2014 it failed to note Attorney General Pam Bondi\u2019s ouster last week, for example \u2014 there are also more serious concerns related to cybersecurity.
\u201cThe app has also raised some alarms from digital privacy researchers who delved<\/a> into its software<\/a> and reported that they had found mechanisms by which it could log users\u2019 location,\u201d the Post\u2019s report noted. NOTUS published a related report<\/a>, adding, \u201cCybersecurity researchers warn that the White House\u2019s new app regularly shares users\u2019 IP addresses, time zones and other data to third-party services. But most of its users wouldn\u2019t know that, because the app doesn\u2019t disclose its data sharing the way most others do.\u201d
The White House denied that the app collects user locations and insisted that the app is \u201csafe and secure.\u201d There appear to be quite a few cybersecurity researchers who have come to a very different conclusion.
