Mojtaba Khamenei is Iran\u2019s new supreme leader, and Masoud Pezeshkian has been president since 2024.<br \/>Mr Trump added that the US would be \u201cblasting <a href=\"\/topic\/iran\">Iran<\/a> into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages\u201d if the <a href=\"\/topic\/strait-of-hormuz\">Strait of Hormuz<\/a> was not opened. <br \/><a href=\"\/topic\/tehran\">Tehran<\/a>\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson said Mr Trump\u2019s statements were false and baseless, Iranian state TV reports.<br \/>The aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush is slated to go to the Middle East, along with three destroyers, officials said. The carrier strike group consists of more than 6,000 sailors. Thousands of soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division have also begun arriving, according to other US officials. <br \/>Mr Trump also told <em>The Telegraph<\/em> that <a href=\"\/topic\/nato\">Nato<\/a> was a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d and that taking the US out was now \u201cbeyond reconsideration\u201d.<br \/>The French navy chief has said China will need to engage more in discussions on the Strait of Hormuz.<br \/>Admiral \u2060Nicolas Vaujour told the War &#038; \u200cPeace security conference in Paris that the number \u2060of vessels China has going through is probably insufficient.<br \/>&#8220;We have not seen China\u2019s navy step in to reopen the strait. On the other hand, there \u2060is direct political dialogue between Chinese \u200band \u2060Iranian authorities to ensure that a certain number of vessels can pass. Will that be enough \u2060to restore normal traffic flows? I don\u2019t believe so,&#8221; \u200bhe said.<br \/>&#8220;As a result, China will probably have to engage more directly in the debate \u200cand show its impatience with the \u200cfact that the strait remains closed.&#8221;<br \/>Vaujour said France was working to bring a number of countries around the table at a political level \u2060first to determine the conditions under which the strait could be reopened in a lasting way.<br \/>Donald Trump has claimed the King would have backed him up over the war in Iran when Sir Keir Starmer did not.<br \/>The US president told <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2026\/04\/01\/donald-trump-interview-king-charles-stood-by-us-iran-war\/\"><em>The Telegraph<\/em><\/a> the King would have taken a \u201cdifferent stand\u201d from the prime minister.<br \/>\u201cI like him. I always liked him as a prince. He\u2019s a good man, a great representative for your country,\u201d Mr Trump said when asked about the King\u2019s forthcoming US state visit. <br \/>\u201cI think he would have taken a very different stand [on the war in Iran] but he doesn\u2019t do that. I mean, he\u2019s a great gentleman.\u201d<br \/>Referring to the breakdown in US-UK relations over the war, Mr Trump acknowledged that the King had \u201cnothing to do with this\u201d.<br \/>\u201cHe\u2019s a wonderful and brave man, to be honest with you. He\u2019s been through a lot, in many ways,\u201d he said.<br \/>Downing street has said it is \u201cvital that freedom of navigation\u201d is restored in the Strait of Hormuz in a meeting with Nato. <br \/>Sir Keir Starmer spoke to Nato secretary general Mark Rutte this afternoon about the Middle East conflict and updated him on plans for a virtual meeting of foreign ministers tomorrow.<br \/>A Downing Street spokesperson said: \u201cThe leaders began by discussing the situation in Ukraine, and the progress being made on peace talks.<br \/>\u201cThe leaders underlined their unwavering support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and reiterated that Ukraine\u2019s future was for its people to decide.<br \/>\u201cTurning to the Middle East, the leaders reflected on the Prime Minister\u2019s speech this morning, and the Prime Minister updated on plans for the virtual meeting of foreign ministers tomorrow.<br \/>\u201cIt was vital that freedom of navigation was restored in the Strait of Hormuz, and that all countries played their part in a viable plan to ensure the free flow of trade, the leaders agreed.\u201d<br \/>With Trump\u2019s dismissal of the Western alliance as a \u2018paper tiger\u2019 \u2013 and his unflinching declaration that he is considering abandoning it \u2013 it\u2019s about time European leaders started preparing for \u2018the day after Nato\u2019, says Mark Almond.<br \/>Jet fuel supply to Europe could be disrupted from June if the Middle East conflict does not end in \u2060the next month, Ryanair CEO Michael O&#8217;Leary warned. <br \/>He added that it could mean the airline and rivals will need to consider cancelling summer season flights.<br \/>O&#8217;Leary said the airline company is holding daily calls with all of its fuel suppliers across Europe to assess the situation, which the suppliers say will remain stable until the end of May. <br \/>&#8220;If this (the conflict) continues through to the end of April, we&#8217;re looking at a risk to supplies in early June.
