ASHTIAN CHATHAM BALANCES TWO WORLDS \u2014 AND THRIVES IN BOTH.
A student at Aldine Blanson CTE High School, where she\u2019s pursuing computer programming, Chatham heads across the district to compete for Davis High School track and field \u2014 and she\u2019s rewriting the record books when she gets there.
\u201cI\u2019m a very competitive person,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I first started, I wasn\u2019t that good \u2014 but I wanted to get better. It stuck. My improvement was gradual.\u201d
That steady climb turned into history. Chatham now holds the school records in the 400 and 800 meters, with bigger goals still ahead.
\u201cMy goals this year are to also break the school record for the mile.\u201d
Middle-distance racing is as mental as it is physical \u2014 something she embraces.
\u201cThe 400 and 800 are really about who wants it more at the end,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s about grit.\u201d
What she loves most about track is its simplicity \u2014 and its honesty.
\u201cIf I do good, it\u2019s because of me. If I do bad, it\u2019s on me too,\u201d she said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to depend on anyone else.\u201d
Make no mistake \u2014 she wants to win.
\u201cI like to win. That\u2019s just how I\u2019m built. But I\u2019m not mean competitive.\u201d
Her future includes college track, but her ambitions stretch beyond the oval. At Blanson CTE, she\u2019s immersed in computer programming and sees herself one day becoming a data analyst.
\u201cI\u2019m into computer programming. I see myself being a data analyst,\u201d she said.
The balance isn\u2019t always easy. She\u2019s enrolled in AP and dual-credit classes \u2014 a workload that demands discipline.
\u201cIt\u2019s very stressful to be in AP classes and dual-credit classes,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut I wouldn\u2019t have it any other way. I like to challenge myself. In the classroom, I try my best.\u201d
Track provides a contrast.
\u201cBlanson is where I go for academics. I come to Davis to do sports. Davis is a breath of fresh air. It\u2019s cool to meet all sorts of different people.\u201d
Off the track, she keeps things light. She plays volleyball with friends, enjoys cooking \u2014 and especially eating \u2014 and is currently catching up on the anime One Piece.
\u201cI love the fantasy aspect of the genre,\u201d she said. \u201cI love Zoro \u2014 he\u2019s always getting lost. I can relate to that.\u201d
Lost? Maybe sometimes. Driven? Always.
Whether she\u2019s chasing a school record, debugging code or grinding through the final stretch of an 800, Ashtian Chatham is proof that competitiveness and curiosity can coexist \u2014 and that the finish line is only the beginning.
