The Missouri Senate has given unanimous approval to a bill that lets law enforcement step in when drones show up in certain restricted areas.
The bill\u2019s sponsor, State Sen. Nick Schroer, R-St. Charles, said the bill gives law enforcement the tools to combat when drones are being used in a criminal matter especially with several major events upcoming in Missouri.
\u201cThe World Cup, start of baseball season’s happening and we’ve got a lot of open-air stadiums where these drones can provide for a lot of unsafe conditions,\u201d said Schroer. \u201cThere is an emergency clause and I will be asking for your support on this as time is of the essence.\u201d
Schroer said lawmakers need to move quickly because the measure directly ties to public health, safety and welfare.
\u201cWhiteman Air Force Base, other Air Force bases, other military installations, they still have these unmanned drones that they don’t know who they’re linked back to,\u201d said Schroer. \u201cWe see correctional facilities that they’re being used to drop drugs and paraphernalia and even weapons, which that presents a huge health and safety issue to the guards at these prisons and other prisoners.\u201d
Schroer said drones are no longer just a hobby \u2014 and that there are growing security concerns.
\u201cThe Iranian conflict that they’re being weaponized,\u201d said Schroer. \u201cWe’ve seen with the Russian conflict in Ukraine. We’ve seen in America where they’re being utilized to drop off drugs, weapons into correctional facilities. So, this simply would allow law enforcement to have the tools to bring these things down.\u201d
The bill and the emergency clause passed with unanimous Senate approval and now goes to the Missouri House for another look.
