All voters have to declare a party affiliation to participate.<br \/>Unaffiliated voters can still vote in the primary but must declare a party affiliation, Democrat or Republican, at the polls. After a voter casts an in-person vote in the Democratic or Republican Party\u00a0primary\u00a0election, the voter will be affiliated with that political party going forward. Party affiliations can be changed by completing, signing and returning a change of party affiliation form to the municipal clerk or county commissioner of registration.<br \/>On the county level, two Republicans are competing for a chance to become the next Bergen County Surrogate. In November, it will be the first time in 28 years the county elects a new surrogate. Last year, long-time Bergen County <a href=https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/bergen\/2025\/12\/04\/bergen-county-surrogate-judge-michael-dressler-dies-at-73\/87607760007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Surrogate Judge Michael R. Dressler died<\/a>. The governor still has not named an interim replacement.
