The test requires screening through saliva, a cheek swab or a blood sample. <br \/>No woman who transitioned from being born male competed at the 2024 Paris Summer Games, and it is unclear if any transgender women currently compete at an Olympic level. The new policy, however, aligns with President Trump\u2019s <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2025-02-05\/trump-plans-to-bar-transgender-female-athletes-from-competing-in-womens-or-girls-sporting-events\">executive order<\/a> banning transgender athletes from participating in women\u2019s or girls\u2019 sporting events in the United States.<br \/>The eligibility policy approved by the IOC is not retroactive and does not apply to recreational sports programs.<br \/>The IOC said in a statement that it \u201cprotects fairness, safety and integrity in the female category. <br \/>\u201cEligibility for any female category event at the Olympic Games or any other IOC event, including individual and team sports, is now limited to biological females.\u201d<br \/> <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/sports\/olympics\">Olympics<\/a> <br \/>Everything you need to know about the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games from the Los Angeles Times\u2019 team of reporters and photographers.<br \/>Until now, individual sports federations determined whether transgender women were allowed to compete in women\u2019s categories, with the IOC providing only recommendations. Sports that placed restrictions on transgender athletes included track and field, boxing, swimming and rugby.<br \/>The <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/ioc\/executive-board\" target=\"_blank\" >IOC Executive Board <\/a>approved the new policy after 18 months of study. It mirrors the guidelines approved by the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/worldathletics.org\/news\/press-releases\/sry-gene-test-athletes-female-category\" target=\"_blank\" >World Athletics Council<\/a> in June, determining eligibility for the female category through screening for the absence or presence of the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/health-and-medicine\/sry-gene\" target=\"_blank\" >SRY gene<\/a>.<br \/>The IOC policy leans on scientific research that considers the presence of the SRY gene fixed for life and represents evidence that an athlete has experienced male sex development. Athletes who screen negative for the SRY gene will be eligible to compete in women\u2019s sports.<br \/>SRY (which stands for sex-determining region Y gene) is found on the Y chromosome. In the cell, it binds to other DNA, leading to testis formation, according to the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK22246\/\" target=\"_blank\" >National Library of Medicine<\/a>.
