For the tenth year in a row, Loughborough has been crowned the world\u2019s best university for sports-related subjects in the QS global rankings.
This incredible achievement – a decade at the top and the sole holder of the title since it was launched by QS in 2017 – highlights how sport sits at the very core of the University and has helped shape a truly unique environment.<\/span> <\/span>
The<\/span>\u202f<\/span>School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Sports Technology Institute<\/span><\/a>\u202f<\/span>and<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Institute for Sport Business<\/span><\/a>\u202f<\/span>are all renowned for the fundamental and applied research they undertake in this field. Together they have helped athletes win Olympic and Paralympic medals, improved public health and influenced international sports policy at the highest level.<\/span> <\/span>
In November, the University received royal recognition for its pioneering contributions to Para and disability sport, being awarded the prestigious <\/span>Queen Elizabeth Prize for Higher and Further Education<\/span><\/a>. Loughborough now ranks among the most highly recognised institutions for the prize, with eight awards in total – a record surpassed only by the University of Oxford.<\/span> <\/span>
Its groundbreaking <\/span>Women in Sport Research and Innovation Hub<\/span><\/a> is bringing together leading academics, industry partners, national governing bodies, and elite-level athletes to drive positive change at every level of the women’s sporting ecosystem.\u202f<\/span> <\/span>
And since 2002 the University’s <\/span>Sports Technology Institute<\/span><\/a> has worked with adidas on the testing and development of all its tournament footballs, including those for the World Cup and EURO Championships.<\/span> <\/span>
The<\/span>\u202f<\/span>QS World University Rankings by Subject<\/span>\u202f<\/span>is based on surveys of academic staff who specialise in the subject area, and employers who recruit graduates from the discipline. It also considers research output and impact, measuring both citations and paper output over a five-year period.<\/span> <\/span>

It has been awarded five stars in the independent QS Stars university rating scheme and named the best university in the world for sports-related subjects in the 2026 QS World University Rankings – the tenth year running.
Loughborough has been ranked seventh in the Complete University Guide 2026 – out of 130 institutions. This milestone marks a decade in the top ten for Loughborough – a feat shared only by the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, St Andrews, Durham and Imperial.
Loughborough was also named University of the Year for Sport in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025 – the fourth time it has been awarded the prestigious title.
In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 over 90% of its research was rated as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally-excellent’. In recognition of its contribution to the sector, Loughborough has been awarded eight Queen Elizabeth Prizes for Higher and Further Education.
