The impending move to the launch pad would mark a critical milestone ahead of a mission known as Artemis 2.<br \/>The second mission under NASA&#8217;s multibillion-dollar Artemis program, Artemis 2 would mark the agency&#8217;s first lunar venture with humans aboard since <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/01\/06\/nasa-artemis-moon-ksc\/88043546007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/01\/06\/nasa-artemis-moon-ksc\/88043546007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Apollo era came to an end<\/a> in 1972. Originally slated for a February launch, the mission has <a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/02\/23\/nasa-artemis-2-launch-date-delay\/88820295007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/02\/23\/nasa-artemis-2-launch-date-delay\/88820295007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encountered delays amid issues with the SLS rocket<\/a> that prevented it from getting off the ground.<br \/>Now, after the rocket was <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/02\/25\/nasas-artemis-2-rocket-kennedy-space-center\/88823015007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/02\/25\/nasas-artemis-2-rocket-kennedy-space-center\/88823015007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moved from the launch pad<\/a> more than three weeks ago for repairs, NASA will roll it back out again in the coming days.<br \/>Here&#8217;s everything to know about the SLS rollout, and how to watch NASA&#8217;s live coverage of the move.<br \/><span class=exclude-from-newsgate><strong style=margin-right:3px>Space exploration: <\/strong><a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/12\/22\/cape-canaveral-rocket-launch-spacelight-2026-florida\/87841885007\/ rel=noreferrer target=_blank>How Florida&#8217;s Space Coast will have a central role in 2026 spaceflight<\/a><\/span><br \/>NASA looks to soon roll the 322-foot rocket Space Launch System (SLS) rocket \u2013 topped with the Orion crew capsule \u2013 back to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center.<br \/>The target date for the rollout has fluctuated as NASA teams determine when the integrated spacecraft will be ready for the arduous 4-mile trek back to Launch Pad 39B. After <a href=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/03\/16\/nasa-eyes-new-date-for-artemis-ii-rocket-rollout\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/03\/16\/nasa-eyes-new-date-for-artemis-ii-rocket-rollout\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bumping the rollout<\/a> from Thursday, March 19, to Friday, March 20, <a href=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/03\/17\/nasa-reassessing-artemis-ii-rollout-as-ground-teams-make-up-time\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/missions\/2026\/03\/17\/nasa-reassessing-artemis-ii-rollout-as-ground-teams-make-up-time\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA now says<\/a> it may be possible to transport the SLS on the earlier day after all.<br \/>The original possible delay was due to an electrical harness on the core stage&#8217;s flight termination system that needed to be replaced. Regardless of the day the rollout takes place, the target launch date would remain the same, NASA said.<br \/>The impending move comes after the giant rocket, which was <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/01\/20\/nasas-moon-rocket-florida-artemis-launch\/88215016007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/01\/20\/nasas-moon-rocket-florida-artemis-launch\/88215016007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first rolled to the launch pad in mid-January<\/a>, has been back in NASA&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/718659main_vab.pdf target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vehicle Assembly Building<\/a> since <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2026\/02\/23\/nasa-sls-rollback-artemis-2\/88820310007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2026\/02\/23\/nasa-sls-rollback-artemis-2\/88820310007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the end of February<\/a> as engineers made repairs.<br \/>When a date and time for the rollout is finalized, NASA plans to provide live coverage of the move \u2013 expected to take up to 12 hours as the fully-stacked rocket is slowly transported on a massive vehicle<a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/graphics\/2026\/02\/25\/how-crawler-moves-artemis-to-launch-pad-nasa\/88860105007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0known as a crawler-transporter<\/a>.<br \/>The event is not listed on <a href=https:\/\/plus.nasa.gov\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/plus.nasa.gov\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA+<\/a>, the agency&#8217;s free streaming service. A livestream is likely to be available on NASA&#8217;s <a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@NASA\/streams data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@NASA\/streams target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube channel<\/a>.<br \/>NASA is <a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/03\/13\/launch-date-nasa-artemis-2-moon-mission\/89118786007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/03\/13\/launch-date-nasa-artemis-2-moon-mission\/89118786007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working toward an April 1 launch<\/a> of its historic Artemis 2 mission from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.<br \/>But if the weather or any other factors were to cause the launch to be delayed, several other days in April remain possibilities <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/03\/12\/nasas-artemis-ii-mission-set-for-april-launch-date\/89121952007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/03\/12\/nasas-artemis-ii-mission-set-for-april-launch-date\/89121952007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">under NASA&#8217;s timeline<\/a>, including April 2-6 and April 30.<br \/>The announcement, made during a <a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/03\/13\/launch-date-nasa-artemis-2-moon-mission\/89118786007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/03\/13\/launch-date-nasa-artemis-2-moon-mission\/89118786007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March 12 news conference<\/a>, followed a flight readiness review in which officials assessed a variety of factors, including the status of the lunar rocket, before committing to a target launch date.<br \/>Hitching a ride atop NASA&#8217;s Space Launch System rocket, the Artemis 2 astronauts are due to pilot an Orion capsule on a 10-day trip around the moon. While no moon landing is in store for the mission, the crew will test systems and hardware for future expeditions to the surface while traveling about 4,700 miles beyond the far side of the moon\u00a0\u2013 <a href=https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/science\/nasa-rolls-giant-sls-rocket-launchpad-second-artemis-moon-mission-2026-01-17\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the farthest humans have ever ventured in space<\/a>.<br \/>While NASA tested its spacecraft during the Artemis 1 mission in 2022, Artemis 2 will be the first time that the SLS rocket and the Orion capsule will fly with humans aboard.<br \/>A moon landing is<a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/03\/02\/nasa-artemis-moon-lunar-mission-overhaul-launch-florida\/88942759007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/03\/02\/nasa-artemis-moon-lunar-mission-overhaul-launch-florida\/88942759007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> now due to take place as early as 2028<\/a> during a mission known as Artemis 4. Prior to that mission, Artemis 3 astronauts aboard the Orion capsule are due to meet and dock in 2027 in Earth orbit with at least one of the <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/11\/04\/spacex-starship-moon-landing-florida\/87062160007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2025\/11\/04\/spacex-starship-moon-landing-florida\/87062160007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commercial lunar landers<\/a>\u00a0being developed by\u00a0Elon Musk&#8217;s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos&#8217;\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2026\/03\/17\/blue-origin-cape-canaveral-bezos-virgin-galactic\/89182214007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/news\/2026\/03\/17\/blue-origin-cape-canaveral-bezos-virgin-galactic\/89182214007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blue Origin<\/a>.<br \/>The <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/02\/25\/trump-state-of-the-union-address-artemis-astronauts\/88857361007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/02\/25\/trump-state-of-the-union-address-artemis-astronauts\/88857361007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crew of Artemis 2<\/a> includes NASA astronauts\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/g-reid-wiseman\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reid Wiseman<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/victor-j-glover\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Victor Glover<\/a> and <a href=https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/astronauts\/christina-koch\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christina Koch<\/a>, as well as the Canadian Space Agency&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/astronauts\/canadian\/active\/bio-jeremy-hansen.asp target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeremy Hansen<\/a>.<br \/>With a target launch date set, the astronauts will be <a href=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/01\/26\/artemis-rocket-launch-quarantine-florida\/88319771007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.floridatoday.com\/story\/tech\/science\/space\/2026\/01\/26\/artemis-rocket-launch-quarantine-florida\/88319771007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required to isolate in quarantine<\/a> at the Johnson Space Center in Houston for about two weeks before the mission in order to avoid exposure to any illnesses.
