Poland\u2019s conservative opposition moved Saturday to oust Prime Minister Donald Tusk\u2019s government through a parliamentary no-confidence motion, proposing a temporary administration as the country\u2019s constitutional crisis deepened.
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said a motion of no confidence would be submitted against Tusk\u2019s government and proposed replacing it with a temporary administration led by former Parliament Speaker Marek Jurek.
\u201cWe are submitting a motion of no confidence in Donald Tusk\u2019s government,\u201d Morawiecki wrote on US social media platform X.
\u201cOur proposal: a technical government led by Marek Jurek, to remain in place until elections that will determine a new parliamentary majority,\u201d he added.
The move marks a political escalation following a confrontation over Poland\u2019s Constitutional Tribunal described by President Karol Nawrocki as a \u201cviolation of the constitutional order\u201d and a \u201cforcible takeover of a constitutional state body.\u201d
Nawrocki cut short a trip to Senegal, returned to Warsaw overnight, and called urgent consultations with parliamentary parties on Saturday, citing what he called a threat to Poland\u2019s internal security.
The crisis erupted after Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended Tribunal head Bogdan Swieczkowski and assumed control of the institution, a move rejected by Swieczkowski and the Law and Justice (PiS) opposition as illegal.
Tusk\u2019s government says it is acting to restore the rule of law after judicial changes introduced during eight years of PiS rule, which ended in 2023, while the opposition accuses it of attempting to seize control of independent state institutions.<\/p>\n
