Vientiane (TDI): <\/b>A joint seminar was held on June 19, where representatives from Laos and Australia emphasized that sustainable peace and development can be achieved through cooperation and multilateralism, rather than isolation and confrontation.<\/span>
The event, titled Laos-Australia Perspectives on Multilateralism amid Strategic Uncertainty,<\/em> was co-hosted by the Laos Institute of Foreign Affairs and the Australian Embassy in Vientiane. <\/span>
Both sides sat down and talked about the importance of working together with each other and also with the wider world.<\/span>
Laos\u2019 Head of Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bovonethat Douangchak, gave a clear message that due to uncertainty in the world, the countries should cooperate and work together. <\/span>
Australia\u2019s Benita Sommerville agreed and said the two countries have been partners for more than 76 years and their partnership is based on mutual respect and cooperation. She reaffirmed Australia\u2019s commitment to working with Laos and the region for peace and stability.<\/span>
The officials and diplomats discussed issues like geopolitical competition, climate change, economic uncertainty, and tensions between big powers. <\/span>
Australia highlighted its engagement through multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations, AUKUS, and its longstanding support for ASEAN members since 1974.<\/span>
For Laos, a landlocked country surrounded by big neighbors, it is important to have a reliable partner like Australia while for Canberra, keeping close ties with ASEAN countries is an essential for its Indo-Pacific strategy.<\/span>
Australia has helped Laos in different fields for decades, including education, health, roads, and poverty reduction. It gave Laos duty-free access to its markets in 2003.<\/span>
Both nations signed a Defense Cooperation MOU in 2022. The same year, they agreed to work for a comprehensive partnership, which was achieved in 2024.<\/span>
Today, Australia provides around $64 million in assistance annually in the fields of education, economic growth, and climate resilience. <\/span>Additionally, more than 1400 Lao students have studied in the Australia Awards scholarship program.<\/span>
