It\u2019s been a week of volatile and <\/span>ad hoc AI policy and drama<\/strong> after <\/span>Anthropic\u2019s \u2018The Blip 2.0\u2019<\/strong> \u2014 what I\u2019ve been calling the US government\u2019s move against the company\u2019s latest Mythos and Fable 5 models. A nod to the original \u2018Blip 1.0\u2019 weekend three+ years ago, when OpenAI\u2019s then-nonprofit board fired and rehired Sam Altman. A full week on from the Anthropic bans, there\u2019s <\/span>little evidence of resolution<\/strong> \u2014 and more signs of <\/span>\u2018on the fly\u2019 demands, priorities and expectations from the White House<\/strong>, especially since the departures of \u2018AI Czar\u2019 and tech VCs <\/span>David Sacks<\/strong> and his #2, <\/span>Sriram Krishnan<\/strong>. It\u2019s both a <\/span>\u2018hands-off\u2019 and \u2018hands-on\u2019<\/strong> approach to AI \u2014 with <\/span>diminishing benefits for the US and its global tech and AI leadership.<\/strong> Three events I\u2019d like to dig into today for the <\/span>AI Tech Wave<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 each with my Take first, then my Overall Take.<\/span>
(Update: There may <\/span>signs of a \u2018thaw\u2019 from Trump<\/a> himself on view of Anthropic, as per an interview with Axios. So there maybe a reversal of \u2018The Blip 2.0\u2019 yet: \u201cDario Amodei was \u2018nice and smart\u2019 at G7 meeting. So there\u2019s that.)<\/span><\/em>
MP TAKE:<\/strong> The administration\u2019s evolving strategy \u2014 since the departure of its chief AI Czar and his #2, <\/span>David Sacks and Sriram Krishnan<\/strong> \u2014 is showing signs of an <\/span>ad-hoc, \u2018on-the-fly\u2019 set of vibes.<\/strong> These changing dynamics have <\/span>big implications for US AI policy<\/strong>, far beyond the factors that drove the Anthropic action.<\/span>
There are other AI priorities in flux \u2014 ranging from <\/span>US immigration policy<\/strong> that impacts the tech industry\u2019s recruitment of the best tech and AI talent from around the world, to the <\/span>upcoming trade and tech negotiations with China<\/strong> continuing at the White House this Fall. In addition, the <\/span>White House is currently considering taking stakes in US AI companies<\/strong> \u2014 via some sort of sovereign-wealth-fund vehicle, influenced by OpenAI and others \u2014 yet another example of this ad-hoc approach to AI policy. <\/span>Ironically mimicking \u2018Communist\u2019 China\u2019s otherwise soundly-criticized strategy of taking \u2018Golden Shares\u2019 in its leading tech and AI companies.<\/strong>

MP TAKE:<\/strong> Again, these reports highlight the need to <\/span>balance the technical realities of AI fundamentals and research vs the features one would ideally wish for in a more perfect world.<\/strong> They underline the <\/span>widening gap between those two necessities.<\/strong>
The administration appears to want a near-100% guarantee that next-gen models cannot be jailbroken \u2014 and as every technologist will tell you, that\u2019s near-impossible. These are <\/span>probabilistic, not deterministic, systems<\/strong>, and almost anything in technology hardware and software, can eventually be jailbroken. It\u2019s a bit like wishing for Santa Claus. And it <\/span>does not bode well versus a top-down leadership in China driven by engineers and technocrats<\/strong> \u2014 against the <\/span>lawyers and politicians here in the US.<\/strong> It\u2019s increasingly apparent on all matters AI and tech.<\/span>

MP TAKE:<\/strong> Anecdotal evidence has the Anthropic Friday-evening ban triggered by a <\/span>conversation between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent<\/strong> around \u2018AI jailbreak\u2019 concerns. These separate sets of stories again highlight the <\/span>drama-driven tendencies of the US AI scene<\/strong> \u2014 where shifting business interests and political communications at the highest levels can <\/span>shift AI policies with the slightest change in prevailing sentiments.<\/strong> Not to mention incentives.<\/span>
Recall that Amazon was an early Anthropic investor ($13B+) and also has a roughly $50B OpenAI investment coming \u2014 so it\u2019s vested in both. Yet Amazon-MGM also reportedly pulled a near-finished Sam Altman movie, post that OpenAI investment and data-center deal. This isn\u2019t about money; Amazon\u2019s Anthropic stake alone would be worth hundreds of billions. It\u2019s about business interests, incentives and orientations. <\/span>No way to run an AI railroad<\/a><\/strong>, as I <\/span>discussed earlier<\/a><\/strong> this week.<\/span>

It\u2019s <\/span>disconcerting<\/strong> to read these reports of how the Anthropic shutdown was triggered by a <\/span>Jassy \/ Bessent conversation<\/strong> \u2014 especially when neither executive at Amazon nor Treasury is deeply versed in the technical realities of these latest models and their cybersecurity issues. Indeed, indications were that <\/span>Amazon and Anthropic tech folks were in deep discussions<\/strong> around these \u2018jailbreak\u2019 concerns. Not to mention the <\/span>one-sided, anti-Anthropic views of the Department of Defense and its head, Hegseth.<\/strong>
The current White House set of events seems to be inspired by <\/span>knee-jerk perceptions of individual threats \u2014 real or exaggerated \u2014 without a steadier, long-term eye to governing US AI-model safety across the industry.<\/strong> Especially when <\/span>OpenAI and others are all racing toward AI models that can meet and potentially beat Anthropic\u2019s<\/strong> in the not-too-distant future. And it <\/span>does not bode well versus a top-down leadership in China driven by engineers and technocrats \u2014 against the lawyers and politicians here in the US<\/strong> \u2014 especially if these geopolitical, AI-space-race concerns are the true drivers of US AI policy, as presented to the world at large.<\/span>

Since Father\u2019s Day is this Sunday, I thought we\u2019d focus today\u2019s Gadget AI on <\/span>Father\u2019s Day gift ideas<\/strong> \u2014 the Verge\u2019s guide, plus my own five picks. These are things I own personally, like and actually use, from some of the newest to a few I\u2019ve used for a while. In no particular order:<\/span>
Google Fitbit Air<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 $100. A screenless health tracker that, with its app, does all kinds of cool health measurements. (The Apple Watch does all this and more, but costs more.)<\/span>
Clicks Power Keys<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 $99. A MagSafe-powered, BlackBerry-style physical keyboard you clip onto almost any phone \u2014 for the retro folks who want real keys and fewer typos. Just got mine and like it a lot.<\/span>
Anker Laptop Power Bank<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 $120. A powerful 25,000+ mAh bank with a built-in cord that can power a couple of phones, a laptop and more.<\/span>
Alpaka Flight Sling<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 $49. A small, compact flight sling for all your digital essentials on a plane, from one of my favorite bag makers. (I\u2019m a bag nerd.)<\/span>
Kindle Scribe (2025 models)<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 $430 to $650. The modestly bigger Kindles, now in three new models (two black-and-white, with and without front light, and a color one). Read your Kindle books, write on infinite notebooks with the pen \u2014 a delight if you\u2019re in the Kindle ecosystem.<\/span>
MP Take: A handful of <\/span>Father\u2019s Day gadget ideas for Sunday<\/strong> \u2014 across health, productivity, power, carry and reading. They all have <\/span>AI tinges<\/strong>, since they power or enable devices that are increasingly AI-capable \u2014 thus Gadget AI. Things I own and actually use.<\/span>
The <\/span>Anker power bank.<\/strong> A <\/span>must-have<\/strong> in today\u2019s world of powered gadgets \u2014 for AI and otherwise. And there\u2019s a regulatory wrinkle: airlines are increasingly clamping down on how many power banks you can carry, with a number now down to just <\/span>one or two.<\/strong> If you\u2019re down to one, the Anker I recommended packs enough capacity (20,000+ mAh) to run two or three devices, with a built-in USB-C cord and a relatively compact body. That\u2019s my one pick to travel with.<\/span>
The <\/span>Google Fitbit Air.<\/strong> As someone who uses the Apple Watch for health and everything else, I like the Fitbit Air \u2014 but I\u2019d love for it to have a <\/span>small clock or watch display.<\/strong> It\u2019s one reason I also use a similarly priced health band from <\/span>Xiaomi<\/strong>, which has a beautiful small OLED display. If a gizmo is going to take up your wrist real estate, the natural habit is to glance there for the time. So that\u2019s my wish-for feature.<\/span>

MP Take: There\u2019s a fundamental disconnect between the policy wish for zero jailbreaks and the technical reality \u2014 it\u2019s a bit like wishing for Santa Claus. That widening gap between what\u2019s asked for and what can be delivered does not bode well against China\u2019s engineer-led, top-down approach.
