And the U.S. women\u2019s national team coach might have just solved FIFA\u2019s new, dreaded men\u2019s World Cup feature, the hydration break.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7363111\/2026\/06\/15\/emma-hayes-itv-hydration-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It only took her 70 seconds<\/a>.<br \/>With Spain struggling to find answers for tournament debutants Cape Verde earlier today, Hayes suggested the 2010 World Cup winners focus on their \u201cwide rotations\u201d that produced two strong breakthroughs in the \u201cfirst quarter.\u201d<br \/>Obviously,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7359746\/2026\/06\/15\/spain-cape-verde-world-cup-result-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain wasn\u2019t able to hear her<\/a>, leading to one of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7363265\/2026\/06\/15\/greatest-world-cup-shocks-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most shocking results in World Cup history<\/a>. Unfortunately for those in the U.S., the only clips of Hayes you\u2019ll get are on social media or using a VPN.<br \/><strong>Soccer history lesson<\/strong><br \/>The U.S. men have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7358632\/2026\/06\/14\/usmnt-soccer-fans-america-world-cup-style-mckennie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sparked optimism across the country<\/a>&nbsp;with their 4-1 win over Paraguay in Friday\u2019s opening match of their World Cup run. But they are still following the lead of a team that has been dominant for decades.<br \/><strong>The reason the men don\u2019t have a superstar&nbsp;\u2014 yet \u2014 is the same reason the U.S. women do: culture,&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7353526\/2026\/06\/15\/us-women-men-top-100-players\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>as Asli Pelit writes<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><br \/>Though you can\u2019t compare the teams\u2019 experiences in World Cups for various reasons, it\u2019s important to recognize the dominance the U.S.&nbsp;<em>women<\/em>&nbsp;have long shown amid any conversation about the growth of the sport.<br \/>You can certainly still celebrate both teams. In fact, many of the U.S. women were in the stands last Friday to witness the men\u2019s impressive win at SoFi. We asked a couple of those players what it was like to experience the game in person:<br \/><strong>\ud83d\udcac North Carolina Courage midfielder Riley Jackson:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019ve always dreamed of attending a World Cup. Getting to do so for the first time on U.S. soil in such an amazing atmosphere was more special than I could have imagined.\u201d (Note: The U.S. women won the 1999 Women\u2019s World Cup six years before Jackson was born.)<br \/><strong>\ud83d\udcac Chelsea forward Alyssa Thompson:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cI thought the energy and the crowd were electric. It was so cool being able to watch a World Cup game live in our home country. The game was super exciting, our team played so well and I had so much fun. I can\u2019t wait to go to more games and cheer on the guys!\u201d<br \/>The U.S. men will continue&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/interactive\/fifa-mens-world-cup-2026-tracker\/group-knockout-chances-country\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their World Cup journey<\/a>&nbsp;Friday at 3 p.m. ET against Australia. You can catch the game on Fox and in Spanish on Telemundo and Peacock.<br \/>Meanwhile, the men\u2019s next chance to support the women in a tournament of the same magnitude on home soil will be in Los Angeles at the 2028 Olympics or at the 2031 Women\u2019s World Cup, which will likely be in the U.S., Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica.<br \/><strong>Mexico honors 1971 World Cup<\/strong><br \/>In Mexico, Azteca Stadium became the first venue to host games in three separate FIFA World Cups. However, did you know that Azteca \u2014 known as the Cathedral of Football \u2014 also hosted one of the first unofficial Women\u2019s World Cups in 1971?<br \/>That summer, the Mexican women\u2019s national team made history by reaching the final, ultimately falling to Denmark before more than 100,000 fans. Two years ago, we told you about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5557349\/2024\/06\/20\/copa-71-womens-soccer-tournament-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copa 71<\/a>, which aimed to revive the tournament\u2019s forgotten story through film. Fast forward to 2026, and the that 1971 Mexican team is finally being celebrated.<br \/><strong>On Thursday, ahead of the men\u2019s World Cup opener, the team was honored as part of \u201cthe great World Cup parade\u201d in Mexico City.<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DZjKmO1Bkxj\/?igsh=aTdmdXdkcjJlMTIw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">An overdue and well-deserved celebration<\/a>.<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/library.iterable.com\/1557\/5037\/4c0656635e1a42b5a46e1a40e66f1d4c-worldcup71-ezgifcom-optimize.gif\"><br \/><strong>Investing after failing to qualify for 2023<\/strong><br \/>This month\u2019s installment of \u201cSoccer In ___\u201d took a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7354416\/2026\/06\/14\/soccer-in-mexico-womens-soccer-world-cup-investment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deep dive into the state of women\u2019s soccer in Mexico<\/a>. The country is on track to co-host its first women\u2019s World Cup \u2014 and we already know how much impact that type of tournament can have in the country.<br \/>Over to Meg!<br \/>Your local women\u2019s soccer writer here to talk about the men\u2019s World Cup this week. There was a lot of justifiable angst leading into this summer\u2019s tournament, from ticket prices to politics to something as simple as the vibes feeling deeply off. With the games having kicked off, the sport has shown its ineffable power to supplant crass and capitalistic overreach.<br \/>There are many reasons for those who primarily follow women\u2019s soccer to follow this tournament, beyond the fun of watching the USWNT use the USMNT\u2019s first match as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/todayshow\/reel\/DZgYCHoTQGi\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">content goldmine<\/a>. Here are a few more to track:<br \/>This moment on the largest stage is for us to take it back to the stands of our local teams and keep that energy going through 2027 and beyond.
