Only <em>Michael<\/em> and <em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em> have taken the music-biopic genre anywhere near the <strong>$900 million<\/strong> mark.<br \/>Every other title sits far below. <strong>Box Office Mojo<\/strong> figures put <em>Elvis<\/em> (<strong>2022<\/strong>) a distant third at <strong>$288.7 million<\/strong>, followed by <em>Straight Outta Compton<\/em> (<strong>2015<\/strong>) at <strong>$202.2 million<\/strong>, <em>Rocketman<\/em> (<strong>2019<\/strong>) <a class=link-external href=https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt2066051\/ target=_blank rel=noopener>at roughly <strong>$195 million<\/strong><\/a>, <em>Bob Marley: One Love<\/em> (<strong>2024<\/strong>) at <strong>$180.8 million<\/strong>, and the <strong>Bob Dylan<\/strong> film <em>A Complete Unknown<\/em> (<strong>2024<\/strong>) at <strong>$140 million<\/strong>.<br \/>No music biopic outside the top two has crossed <strong>$300 million<\/strong>.<br \/>For the music industry, the box-office milestone is only part of the story. That means both the film <em>Michael<\/em> just dethroned, <em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>,\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">which is built on Queen&#8217;s music, and\u00a0<em>Michael<\/em> itself now drive<\/span>\u00a0streaming activity into <strong>Sony<\/strong>-owned catalogs.<br \/>The Jackson acquisition was one of a run of blockbuster catalog deals by <strong>Sony Music Group<\/strong> under chairman <strong><a target=_blank class=link-relationship title=\"People &gt; Rob Stringer [291 articles]\" href=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/people\/rob-stringer\/ >Rob Stringer<\/a><\/strong> that have <a class=link-internal href=https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/how-sonys-6bn-ma-splurge-has-set-the-pace-for-music-acquisitions-over-the-past-decade\/ >cumulatively pushed the company&#8217;s M&amp;A spending past <strong>$6 billion<\/strong> over the past decade<\/a>, per MBW&#8217;s estimate.<br \/><em>Michael<\/em> was directed by <strong>Antoine Fuqua<\/strong> and written by <strong>John Logan<\/strong>, with <strong>Jaafar Jackson,<\/strong> Jackson&#8217;s nephew, making his screen debut in the title role.
