(TIP):<\/strong> A \u200bfederal judge in Washington on Friday, June 12, 2026, declined a request to temporarily \u200cpause an order to remove President Donald Trump\u2019s \u200bname from the Kennedy Centre for the Performing \u2060Arts. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper said he would not lift the order while a federal appeals court considers his ruling that \u200conly Congress could rename the venue memorializing former President John F. Kennedy in the nation\u2019s capital.<br \/>The \u200cTrump administration appealed the order to the \u200cU.S. Court \u2060of Appeals for the District of Columbia, which \u2060also rejected the government\u2019s pause request later on Friday, June 12, 2026. Attorneys for Democratic U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio, who brought the lawsuit, did not \u200bimmediately respond to a request \u200cfor comment, nor did spokespersons for the Justice Department, the White House and the Kennedy Centre.<br \/>Cooper ruled on May 29 that only Congress could rename \u200cthe arts Center. His order had required Mr. Trump\u2019s name \u200bto be removed from the building\u2019s facade, its website and other materials by 11:59 p.m. ET \u2060on Friday, June 12, 2026.<br \/>Lawyers for the administration had asked the appeals court to pause the order, arguing: \u201cIt does not make sense \u200cto alter the Centre\u2019s name and signage now, only to potentially revert the name again after what should be a successful appeal.\u201d<br \/>The Kennedy Centre opened in 1971 as a living memorial to the late president, who was slain in 1963. After Mr. Trump last year replaced several \u200cmembers of the board, the group voted in December to alter \u200bthe center\u2019s name to include him.<br \/>Mr. Trump in February announced a two-year closure of the Centre \u2060for a major renovation effort. The Republican leader has made a \u2060broader push to reshape Washington\u2019s monumental core, including plans for a 250-foot (76-meter) arch and a 90,000-square-foot ballroom \u200cat the site of
