Now, as Virgin Galactic prepares to <a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/04\/14\/virgin-galactic-richard-branson-spaceplane-space-tourism\/89605106007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2026\/04\/14\/virgin-galactic-richard-branson-spaceplane-space-tourism\/89605106007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resume commercial operations in 2026<\/a>, the company looks to change that.<br \/>Founded by billionaire Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic has revealed plans to conduct a research spaceflight in 2027 focused on better understanding whether and how microgravity and space travel can influence menstrual cycles and women&#8217;s hormonal health. Led by two women behind a nonprofit focused on women&#8217;s reproductive health, the mission &#8220;represents a landmark moment at the intersection of commercial spaceflight, women\u2019s health and scientific innovation,&#8221; Virgin Galactic said in a statement.<br \/>Here&#8217;s everything to know about the upcoming mission, including the implications it could have for not only future astronauts, but also for healthcare innovation on Earth.<br \/><a href=https:\/\/www.virgingalactic.com\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.virgingalactic.com\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virgin Galactic<\/a> is an aerospace and space travel company that is part of British billionaire Richard Branson&#8217;s Virgin Group conglomerate.<br \/>Like its competitor Blue Origin, founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, Virgin Galactic specializes in <a href=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/06\/29\/virgin-galactic-first-commercial-spaceflight-how-to-watch-livestream\/70368529007\/ data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2023\/06\/29\/virgin-galactic-first-commercial-spaceflight-how-to-watch-livestream\/70368529007\/ target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transporting paying customers<\/a> on brief flights to the edge of space. Virgin Galactic said in a May 28 <a href=https:\/\/www.virgingalactic.com\/news\/manju-bangalore-and-priya-abiram-slated-to-lead-first-dedicated-research-mission-to-study-menstruation-in-space-with-virgin-galactic-on-operation-period-01-op-01 data-type=link data-id=https:\/\/www.virgingalactic.com\/news\/manju-bangalore-and-priya-abiram-slated-to-lead-first-dedicated-research-mission-to-study-menstruation-in-space-with-virgin-galactic-on-operation-period-01-op-01 target=_blank rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> the flight will be used to study the menstrual cycle beyond Earth in suborbital space.<br \/>Previous Virgin Galactic missions have lasted more than an hour from takeoff to touchdown, but passengers typically only have a few minutes to see Earth from space while experiencing a few minutes of weightlessness.
