They have threatened to protest during the World Cup unless a solution is reached.<br \/>Mexico\u2019s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, was set to meet with a top Spanish official on Tuesday but with the teachers blocking access to the Z\u00f3calo and National Palace, the meeting had to take place on Zoom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jornada.com.mx\/noticia\/2026\/06\/02\/politica\/por-protestas-de-cnte-sheinbaum-se-reunio-de-manera-virtual-con-vicepresidente-del-gobierno-de-espana-carlos-cuerpo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">La Jornada reported.<\/a><br \/>The chaos comes a day after the striking teachers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jun\/01\/mexico-city-teachers-protest\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">were teargassed<\/a> and reportedly shot with rubber bullets by riot police as they marched toward Mexico City\u2019s historic Z\u00f3calo plaza, just days before the square is expected to host the 2026 World Cup \u201cFan Fest\u201d.<br \/>Five protesters were injured in the melee, including one teacher who lost an eye, according to union leadership. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/mexico\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Mexico<\/a> City authorities have denied using rubber bullets or teargas.<br \/>On Tuesday, protesters gathered outside the interior ministry to denounce the violence, chanting \u201cIf there is no solution, the ball won\u2019t roll\u201d, in reference to the upcoming World Cup.
