Yale announced it will again require applicants to submit either an SAT or ACT score as part of the admissions process.\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/yale-university\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">Yale University<\/a> has restored its prepandemic policy of requiring applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores, the university <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yale.edu\/2026\/05\/27\/undergraduate-admissions-updates-testing-policy\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">announced<\/a> this week.<br \/>The change marks a move away from the test-optional and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctinsider.com\/news\/education\/article\/ct-yale-standardized-test-college-admission-18681790.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">test-flexible policies<\/a> that Yale and other universities put in place in recent years, and a return to the testing policy that was found at the Ivy League university before 2020.<br \/>Advertisement<br \/>Article continues below this ad<br \/>The updated testing policy is based on the recommendations of Yale\u2019s presidential council for undergraduate admissions, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctinsider.com\/news\/article\/yale-president-inauguration-gaza-divest-protest-20255484.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">Yale President Maurie McInnis<\/a> formed in the fall of 2025 to assess academic policies and procedures, according to a press release. The council recommended reinstituting the ACT or SAT score admissions requirement.<br \/>\u201cThese test scores are strong predictors of a student\u2019s future Yale academic performance, and there is evidence that they are less subject to bias than other elements of an application,\u201d according to the council\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/president.yale.edu\/committees-programs\/presidents-committees\/presidential-council-on-yale-college-admissions\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">website<\/a> page. \u201cA standardized test provides only one window into a student\u2019s academic potential, and no one factor perfectly predicts success at Yale; test scores are considered in the context of whole-person review of all applications.\u201d<br \/>For four years, Yale had a fully test-optional policy.\u00a0The COVID-19 pandemic had <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/act-college-admission-test-score-optional-99f80b26696a92c78e2680873a3df68c\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">prompted<\/a> many colleges and universities across the country to scratch their standardized\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/general-news-9718839fb4216682e7eb49cd9f3d493b\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\">testing requirements<\/a> for admissions amid canceled testing sessions and criticism that the tests put low-income students at a disadvantage.<br \/>Advertisement<br \/>Article continues below this ad<br \/>Yale moved to a stricter \u201ctest-flexible\u201d policy in 2024, which gave applicants four options for submitting scores: the ACT, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) or the SAT.<br \/>But starting with the next admissions cycle, first-year and transfer applicants will be required to submit scores from the ACT or SAT, according to the press release.<br \/>\u201cAcademic strength is the admissions committee\u2019s first and most important consideration when evaluating candidates.
