The CDC also confirmed six new outbreak-related hospitalizations, bringing hospital cases to 32. No deaths have been reported, however.<br \/>\u201cEpidemiologic information shows some lots of TNVitamins Moringa Capsules may be making people sick now,\u201d the CDC said. \u201cCDC and FDA [Food and Drug Administration] continue to work to identify if there are other products causing illness in this outbreak.\u201d<br \/>The CDC said Total Nutrition, Inc, has recalled two brands of moringa capsules: TNVitamins Ultra Potent Complete Green Superfood Moringa 10,000 milligrams [mg], and Doctor\u2019s Pride Complete Green Superfood Ultra Potent Moringa 10,000 mg (see photo above).<br \/>This is the third recall in this outbreak. On January 15, Superfoods, Inc., recalled all&nbsp;Live it Up Super Greens supplement powders. On January 28, Why Not Natural recalled&nbsp;Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules.<br \/>The multistate outbreak involves both the Typhimurium and Newport strains of <em>Salmonella<\/em>. Illness-onset dates in the outbreak range from August 22, 2025, to April 26, 2026. Patients range in age from less than 1 year to 81 years, with a median age of 45. More than half are male (57%), and nearly all are White (92%).<br \/>\u201cThe true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported, and this outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses,\u201d the CDC said. This is because many people recover without medical care and are not tested for <em>Salmonella<\/em>.\u202fIn addition, recent illnesses may not yet be reported.\u201d<br \/>The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely much higher than the number reported.<br \/>Wisconsin has the most cases (16), followed by Minnesota (nine).<br \/>The CDC also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/salmonella\/outbreaks\/moringa-05-26\/index.html\">reported<\/a> yesterday a new <em>Salmonella<\/em> Typhimurium outbreak with 18 cases and seven hospitalizations in 14 states. That separate outbreak is linked to Mogo brand moringa capsules, which have also been recalled.<br \/>US surveillance data show a dramatic rise in the incidence of a particularly worrisome form of multidrug-resistant bacteria in hospital patients, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/32\/6\/25-1404_article\">reported yesterday<\/a> in <em>Emerging Infectious Diseases.<\/em><br \/>The data are from the CDC\u2019s Emerging Infections Program (EIP) Multi-site Gram-negative Surveillance Initiative, which collects and analyzes bacterial isolates from 10 locations around the country to monitor the incidence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE). <span>Infections caused by CRE\u2014which includes carbapenem-resistant strains of&nbsp;<\/span><em><span>Escherichia coli,<\/span><\/em><span>&nbsp;<\/span><em><span>Klebsiella pneumoniae,<\/span><\/em><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><em><span>Enterobacter<\/span><\/em><span>\u2014are among the superbugs the CDC keeps track of because they are resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics and are a major concern for hospital patients.<\/span><br \/><span>In 2022, an estimated 13,387 CRE infections occurred in US hospital patients.<\/span><br \/>The isolates were all tested for the presence of carbapenemase genes, which confer broad resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and can be shared among bacterial species. Of the 1,288 carbapenemase-producing CRE identified from 2016 to 2023, <em>bla<\/em><sub>KPC<\/sub> was the most common carbapenemase gene detected (79%), followed by <em>bla<\/em><sub>NDM&nbsp;<\/sub>(20.6%), <em>bla<\/em><sub>OXA-48-like<\/sub> (7.5%), <em>bla<\/em><sub>IMP<\/sub> (0.6%), and <em>bla<\/em><sub>VIM<\/sub> (0.5%).&nbsp;<br \/>But the proportion of isolates carrying <em>bla<\/em><sub>NDM<\/sub>, which was once rare in the United States, rose from 5.4% in 2016 to 39.8% in 2023. The increase was seen most prominently in <em>E coli,<\/em> with bla<sub>NDM<\/sub> representing 73% of all carbapenemase-producing <em>E coli<\/em> in 2023.<br \/><span>\u201cThe increase of&nbsp;<\/span><em><span>bla<\/span><\/em><span><sub>NDM<\/sub>&nbsp;is alarming given that NDM-producing CRE are more resistant than other CRE isolates,\u201d the study authors wrote, adding that they are resistant to some of the newer beta-lactam combination antibiotics that have been developed specifically for CRE infections, which further limits treatment options.<\/span><br \/><span>The researchers say further investigation is needed to see if the increase is occurring nationwide, to compare the characteristics of patients infected with NDM-producing CRE versus those with <\/span><em><span>bla<\/span><\/em><span><sub>KPC<\/sub>, and to determine whether the increase is related to clonal expansion.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span>\u201cOur findings should alert clinicians to the increase in&nbsp;<\/span><em><span>bla<\/span><\/em><span><sub>NDM<\/sub>&nbsp;and encourage mechanism testing in clinical laboratories,\u201d they wrote.<\/span><br \/><span>Three of the 10 patients described in the report died, and 2 of the other 7 remain hospitalized after infection with the Andes strain of the virus.<\/span><br \/>Six other Americans are in the process of being evacuated.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>All travel restrictions are in place for 30 days.<br \/>Acting CDC director Jay Bhattacharya has asked CDC staff to volunteer for urgent deployment to support Ebola screening at US entry points.<br \/>Quarantines and travel bans won&#8217;t limit the spread of the virus, which spreads through bodily fluids.<br \/>Both newly confirmed case-patients are receiving care in Spain.<br \/>The WHO estimates the case-fatality rate of Bundibugyo at around 40%.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>There are at least 500 suspected cases, including 130 deaths, so far in the outbreak.<br \/><span>The global risk, however, remains low, the WHO says.<\/span><br \/><span>The current DR Congo outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo Ebola strain, which was not the causative lineage in the studies included in the analysis.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/>Help make CIDRAP&#8217;s vital work possible<br \/>CIDRAP &#8211; Center for Infectious Disease Research &amp; Policy<br \/>Research and Innovation Office, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN<br \/><a class=\"button\" href=\"\/contact-us\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"e36ec3b3-e820-42fb-badb-7f4c95bf3fea\" data-entity-substitution=\"canonical\" title=\"Contact Us\">Email us<\/a><br \/>\u00a9 2026 Regents of the University of Minnesota.
