OnlyFans is having a moment on TV. 
Sydney Sweeney is making headlines with it on \u201cEuphoria.<\/a>\u201d Elle Fanning is doing it on \u201cMargo’s Got Money Troubles.\u201d It also popped up on \u201cIndustry\u201d and \u201cAbbott Elementary.\u201d 
Gracie Canaan, who is an OnlyFans creator and also co-hosts the \u201cOnlyFantasy\u201d Audible series <\/a>about the topic, exclusively told Page Six that she thinks there is “danger\u201d in “romanticizing this job as overnight wealth.\u201d 
On HBO Max’s \u201cEuphoria,\u201d Cassie (Sweeney) is shown filming fetish content for the platform, and making over $60K in a short period of time to send to her debt-ridden husband, Nate (Jacob Elordi).
Journalist Leon Neyfakh, who also co-hosts the \u201cOnlyFantasy\u201d Audible series, told Page Six, \u201cthe vast majority\u201d of creators are \u201cnot making anywhere close\u201d to giant sums of money. 
\u201cIt can come down to luck, in some cases,\u201d he noted. 
The social media platform first launched in 2016. There, over 4 million creators directly interact with their subscribers, or “fans,” through sending them pay-per-view content such as photos, videos, and private messages. Many creators \u2013 but not all of them \u2013 post explicit adult material.  
Digital sex work \u201ccan be just as dangerous as in-person,\u201d Canaan warned, because when creators share explicit photos and videos, they\u2019re \u201cout there\u201d in the world. 
\u201cPeople can use it to blackmail you,\u201d she said, before quipping, \u201cWow, I sound like a \u2018don’t do drugs\u2019 PSA!\u201d 
\u201cEuphoria\u201d has gotten backlash for Cassie\u2019s explicit content<\/a>, such as dressing up as a dog, a baby,<\/a> and mailing her used panties to her subscribers. Meanwhile, AppleTV+’s “Margo’s Got Money Troubles” has addressed what can happen, as Margo (Fanning) attempts to do the work anonymously, but she gets doxxed and finds herself facing judgement from family and friends.
Canaan cautioned aspiring OnlyFans creators to \u201cunderstand the risks\u201d and to look at \u201call sides of it\u201d before they \u201cjust look at \u2018Euphoria.\u2019\u201d 
Neyfakh thinks OnlyFans is all over TV now because it has become \u201csuch a recognizable brand.”
“It’s like Xerox,” he said. “Everyone has a sense through osmosis of what it is.”
Canaan told Page Six that the platform \u201cexploded\u201d during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time in 2020, \u201cit was very much still considered something that porn actors do.\u201d 
It became more widely known to the average person in recent years, she explained, as the world entered \u201cthe height of parasocial relationships\u201d online. “Economic uncertainty\u201d has also pushed people to turn to the platform to make a living, as more traditional job markets have shrunk. 
Now, TV shows like \u201cEuphoria,\u201d \u201cIndustry,\u201d and \u201cMargo\u2019s Got Money Troubles\u201d have elevated it even further into the public mainstream sphere. 
Canaan told Page Six that the biggest misconception is \u201cthat everyone on OnlyFans is a dumb slut.\u201d 
In reality, she explained, \u201cit is running a business. It is marketing, it is sales, it is strategy. I think people don’t understand the business savvy required.\u201d
She added that most creators have a \u201cpersona.\u201d Even if they\u2019re posting \u201cporn,\u201d many creators, \u201care partnered, or married, or have kids,\u201d she told Page Six. 
\u201cThis is another job. It can be really fun and rewarding\u2026.But, people don’t realize the mundanity.\u201d 
Neyfakh was also surprised by what he heard from subscribers, as he spoke to them for his Audible series.  
He learned \u201chow big a part of their lives” OnlyFans can be.
\u201cIt’s a real outlet for people who don’t have access to romance in their lives.\u201d 
He noted that this can \u201cgo sideways\u201d when subscribers form “unrealistic expectations\u201d of what their relationship is with their favorite creator. 
The relationships between subscribers and creators are, \u201cnot real. And <\/em>they’re real, at the same time,\u201d he said, adding that the platform has \u201cblurred that line\u201d in a way \u201cthat I found surprising and fascinating.\u201d
Several mainstream celebs have joined the platform<\/a> in recent years, such as Denise Richards, \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d star Drea de Matteo<\/a>, and \u201cAmerican Pie\u201d actress Shannon Elizabeth,<\/a> who reportedly made $1 million in her first week. <\/a>
\u201cThe downside can be that it feels like celebrities are playing make believe in what is a lot of people’s very serious livelihoods,\u201d Canaan told Page Six. 
But, she acknowledged that celebs using the platform also helps \u201cdestigmatize it.\u201d 
\u201cEuphoria\u201d has gestured at the idea that OnlyFans creators are \u201cthe new Hollywood,\u201d and Neyfakh told us that many of the creators he met share that mentality. 
\u201cI think that analogy works really well, because \u2013 as with Hollywood \u2013 lots of people go there with big dreams,” he said. \u201cThey think they can become the next Emma Stone or whatever…But, it happens to very few people, actually.\u201d 
\u201cOnlyFantasy\u201d is out on Audible on May 21.
