The work will include the use of Google AI tools and education products, including Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini for Education, and ReadAlong.
The partnership was announced on May 19, 2026, in a Google blog post by Benedict Gomes, Chief Technologist, Learning and Sustainability at Google, and Maggie Johnson, Vice President and Global Head of Google.org.
UNICEF will work with education leaders, local governments, and communities in the four countries to develop localized education solutions over the next three years. Google will provide access to technology tools, technical support, product workshops, and training for UNICEF staff, local government, and education leaders.
UNICEF will publish annual impact reports to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the education solutions deployed in each country.
The partnership will pair Google technology with UNICEF’s work in education systems, with a focus on teacher training, personalized instruction, foundational reading, and digital learning access.
The initiative will include training teachers to use Gemini and NotebookLM for personalized instruction, while ReadAlong will be used to support foundational reading fluency and comprehension through guided practice.
The work will also focus on essential learning areas, including literacy and numeracy. Google says the partnership is intended to support educators and students in communities where access to digital tools and training remains uneven.
Pia Rebello Britto, UNICEF Global Director of Education, says: “With support from organizations like Google for Education and Google.org, UNICEF is delivering on a new vision to go beyond digital as usual to equip children with essential learning and skills fit for the 21st century. By adopting AI and innovation responsibly, empowering teachers and convening partners, we have the opportunity to put children first while transforming learning and building a better world for generations to come.”
Google cited Pakistan and Kenya as examples of how the UNICEF partnership will be applied.
In Pakistan, UNICEF will provide training and technology to help educators safely use Google AI tools, including Google ReadAlong, to deliver adaptive learning at scale in and out of school. Google said Pakistan faces some of the highest rates of out-of-school children globally, while students who are in school are often years behind their grade level in literacy and numeracy.
In Kenya, UNICEF will work with the Government of Kenya on a digital learning program built around educator training, learner access to technology, and education policy. The program will integrate AI tools including Gemini for Education and NotebookLM, alongside other work on learning improvement.
The Kenya program will support secure access to digital learning for in-school and out-of-school adolescents and youth, while developing skills including critical thinking and problem-solving.
UNICEF will compile annual impact reports during the partnership to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions used in Brazil, India, Pakistan, and Kenya.
The partnership aligns with UNICEF’s Digital Education Strategy, which focuses on digital learning solutions built around children’s rights, teachers’ needs, and community realities.
The next phase will see UNICEF work with local communities, governments, and education leaders across the four countries during the three-year partnership.
© EdTech Innovation Hub.
