A federal judge sided with the government in 2024, finding that Google had violated the law by paying companies like Apple to have its search engine appear as the primary option on smartphones and in web browsers.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/22\/technology\/google-appeals-search-case.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Friday (May 22) by The New York Times (NYT), Google\u2019s appeal argues that Judge Amit P. Mehta, had improperly applied antitrust law in concluding those deals broke the law. The company also argued the judge erred with a ruling that tried to address\u00a0 the monopoly concerns by forcing Google to share some data with its rivals.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As NYT noted, the appeal is the latest chapter in an ongoing battle between Google and the federal government, which has led to the first major antitrust rulings against a Big Tech company in the modern internet age.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The DOJ also sued Google in 2023, claiming it held a monopoly in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/google\/2025\/googles-ad-stack-remains-intact-after-ruling-but-could-face-stiffer-competition-experts-say\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advertising technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Google lost that case as well, with the judge expected to hand down a decision on how to remedy the issue sometime this year.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mehta\u2019s ruling, the report added, fell short of the government\u2019s solution, which called for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/google\/2026\/justice-department-to-appeal-ruling-in-google-search-antitrust-case\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">break-up of Google<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/>Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its appeal, Google took issue with Mehta\u2019s original ruling and his decision on remedies, NYT added, saying that the decision that Google had broken federal antitrust law was \u201cas basic an error of antitrust law as a court can make.&#8221;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe court\u2019s own findings establish that Google\u2019s conduct was lawful,\u201d the company said in the filing, per NYT. \u201cIt developed a superior search engine through hard work, bold innovation and shrewd business decisions.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This case is happening at a time when Google is rolling out what it calls the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/google\/2026\/google-rebuilds-search-around-ai-after-25-years\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest upgrade<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Search in more than 25 years.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Announced May 19 at Google&#8217;s I\/O developer conference in Mountain View, this reconfigured interface accepts text, images, documents, video and open browser tabs and replies with synthesized answers instead of a ranked list of links.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlongside it, Google launched persistent AI agents in Search that monitor topics and push notifications without being prompted,\u201d PYMNTS wrote last week.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also at the conference, Google VP of Search <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/elizabeth-reid-56356724\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz Reid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> told reporters query volume hit an all-time high last quarter.
