But Hollywood producer Joseph \u201cMcG\u201d Nichol and River Jetty Restaurant Group\u2019s Jordan Otterbein, who have operated the venue <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/daily-pilot\/entertainment\/story\/2024-09-25\/lido-theaters-third-act-in-newport-beach\">since its restoration<\/a> two years ago, are looking for new ways to fill its 500 seats.<br \/>A season of comedy and musical acts <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelidotheater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" >running through October<\/a> will build on the initial success of having hosted Grammy-winning musicians, like the Gipsy Kings and Dwight Yoakam as well as hometown rock heroes Sugar Ray.<br \/>\u201cIt\u2019s always been part of the long-term vision,\u201d In\u00e8s Gandal, the Lido Theater\u2019s general manager, told the Pilot. \u201cFilm remains the heart of the Lido, but the goal was always much broader to be a full entertainment venue.\u201d<br \/> <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/daily-pilot\/entertainment\">TimesOC<\/a> <br \/>The restored venue, built in 1939, will reopen in time for the Newport Beach Film Festival in October.<br \/>The restoration, which took about five years to complete and recently won a preservation award from the Art Deco Society, also outfitted the theater with the sound and technical upgrades needed to meet that expanded vision.<br \/>A summer concert series featuring a lineup of tribute bands is set to take the stage, presenting hits from the Eagles, Prince, Pat Benatar and Neil Diamond.<br \/>Gandal called the slate of shows a \u201cgreat jumping off point\u201d as the venue prepares to add major touring artists and original performers to its calendar in the future.<br \/>The historic theater has already landed famed comics like David Spade, star of the films \u201cTommy Boy,\u201d \u201cGrown Ups\u201d and \u201cJoe Dirt,\u201d and Margaret Cho for the season.<br \/>A trailblazing Asian American comic who starred in her \u201cAll American Girl\u201d sitcom, Cho is set to appear at the Lido Theater on Oct. 9 with her new comedy show \u201cCholigarchy.\u201d<br \/>To meet the demand for Spade\u2019s scheduled June 28 appearance, the Lido added a second show on June 25.<br \/> <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/daily-pilot\/news\">News<\/a> <br \/>Newport Beach City Council denied an appeal of a plan to replace the Big Newport movie theater with two high-rise condominium towers.<br \/>Gandal touts the venue as one that couples historic charm with modern comforts for guests and performers alike. It\u2019s a pairing Lido staffers hope will seduce people away from the convenience of streaming options for the sake of a live entertainment experience.<br \/>No drink minimums and easy parking can\u2019t hurt, either.<br \/>From being a coveted venue during the annual Newport Beach Film Festival to booking music and comedy acts, the Lido Theater has made a roaring comeback.<br \/>\u201cWe really want to bring the building to life seven days a week,\u201d Gandal said. \u201cWhat we\u2019re programming right now is fabulous and we\u2019re just scratching the surface.\u201d<br \/>Follow Us<br \/>Gabriel San Rom\u00e1n is a feature writer for TimesOC.
