The tunnel will reportedly become part of a future public archaeological park.
“We were excavating what appeared to be a relatively ordinary and exposed area when we suddenly came across a natural cavity,” said Dr Sivan Mizrahi and Zinovi Matzkevich, excavation directors on behalf of the Antiquities Authority. “To our amazement, as the excavation continued, the cavity developed into a long tunnel. Parts of it are still blocked and winding, meaning we have not yet reached its end.” Scientists believe people could access the tunnel through a staircase leading down into the ancient underground complex. Over the centuries, that passage became buried under multiple layers of earth and debris.
The tunnel is reportedly more than 16 feet tall and almost 10 feet wide, according to excavators who surveyed several points within it.
The scale of the subterranean structure indicates it was a methodical, resource-driven engineering project, archaeologists said.
“The tunnel was deliberately quarried, and it is clear that those who created it invested significant effort, planning, and resources,” the excavation directors explained.
However, scientists do not know the purpose of the mysterious tunnel. At first, they theorized that an ancient civilization used it as a water system to access underground springs. However, it was discovered that the tunnel walls lack plaster coating, a feature typically found in ancient water installations.
There were also no known underground water sources in the immediate vicinity and no signs of water activity in the tunnel itself.
At another point, experts inferred the tunnel served an agricultural or industrial function. This was later debunked as the scale of the excavation and the absence of similar installations in the area did not support the theory.
DONT MISS
Now, archaeologists are determining whether the excavation was intended to reach a layer of bedrock suitable for residential structures or to mine materials used in lime production.
This particular theory is supported by ventilation shafts etched into the ceiling and by pale quarry debris littering the tunnel’s surface.
The findings have raised more questions than answers. The date of its excavation is unknown, and it is possible that workers abandoned the project before completion.
“Not a single diagnostic artifact has been found — not even a small object that could help us determine when the tunnel was created,” said Dr. Mizrahi and Matzkevich. “However, the tunnel lies only a few hundred meters from two important archaeological sites: a public building from the Iron Age discovered in the Arnona neighborhood, and Tel Ramat Rachel, where remains from the Iron Age through to the Islamic period have been documented.”
SEARCH
CONNECT WITH US
THE-EXPRESS.COM
The Express uses notifications to keep you updated

source

Archeologists have unearthed an ancient tunnel in Jerusalem near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel. The interesting find was made by officials of the Israel Antiquities Authority and came just before the construction of a new residential neighborhood championed by the Israel Land Authority.
