According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/tax-filing-season-progressing-smoothly-with-timely-refund-processing-and-a-high-use-of-electronic-filing\" target=\"_blank\">IRS<\/a>, the average tax refund is up this year \u2014 around $3,800 \u2014 as people continue dealing with higher prices on just about everything.<br \/>Financial expert <a href=\"https:\/\/andreaworoch.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Andrea Woroch <\/a>says the key is making your refund work for you before you start spending it.<br \/>If you\u2019re balancing debt and savings, she recommends doing both; pay down high-interest credit cards while also setting aside some emergency savings.<br \/>\u201cPut away some, maybe not all of it, toward an emergency account,\u201d Woroch says. \u201cYou can open a high-yield savings account so that money can make a little more money for you each month.\u201d<br \/>She recommends a service called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breadfinancial.com\/en\/bread-savings\/high-yield-savings-account.html\" target=\"_blank\">Bread Savings<\/a>, which offers 4% annual percentage yield and only requires $100 to open an account with interest compounded daily, helping grow your balance each month. <br \/>She also says your refund can help cover important expenses people often delay, such as health care. Her advice is to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthprices.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">HealthPrices.org <\/a>to compare prices of services at local hospitals. <br \/>\u201cForty-seven percent of Americans put off necessary health care because of the cost,\u201d Woroch says. \u201cBut that can grow into a costly problem later, resulting in chronic illness or emergency care.\u201d<br \/>Woroch says smart uses for a refund could include medical screenings, boosting your HSA, tackling debt, or finally making necessary home or car repairs.<br \/>And if you do decide to spend some of it, make it count.
