ALBUQUERQUE \u2013 The Farmington High girls tennis team left no doubt who ruled the court this weekend, capping off a dominant run to capture the 2026 NMAA Class 5A State Tennis Championship at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center.
The top-seeded Scorpions secured the blue trophy Saturday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over No. 6 Santa Fe, punctuating a tournament where they dropped only three individual matches across three rounds of play.
Farmington entered the tournament as the heavy favorite and lived up to the billing immediately on Friday. In the quarterfinals, the Scorpions delivered a 7-0 sweep of La Cueva. The momentum carried into Saturday morning\u2019s semifinals, where they faced district rival and No. 5 seed Piedra Vista.
While the Panthers put up a fight, Farmington\u2019s depth proved too much in a 5-2 victory, punching their ticket to the late-afternoon final.
The championship matches pitted the powerhouse Scorpions against a surging Santa Fe squad. The No. 6 Demons had played the role of “giant killer” all weekend, narrowly upsetting No. 3 Organ Mountain (5-2) and No. 2 Sandia (5-4) to reach the title round.
However, Farmington\u2019s precision in singles play clinical. The Scorpions jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, securing the 5-1 win before the final matches could even conclude.
It was a tournament defined by upsets on the bottom half of the bracket. Santa Fe\u2019s narrow 5-4 semifinal win over No. 2 Sandia was the highlight of the Saturday morning session, while No. 4 Centennial fell earlier in the weekend to Piedra Vista in a 5-3 battle.
For the Scorpions, they\u2019ve earned their ninth state team championship and second in a row. Coached by Pat McGrath, Farmington also captured the Class 5A girls doubles title on Thursday when Hannah Yazzie and Marley Deswood rallied from a set down to top Rio Rancho\u2019s Ella Jones and Cassie Jones.
