According to a recent EDUCAUSE report, The Impact of AI on Work in Higher Education, 47% of respondents identified copyright and intellectual property violations as among the most urgent risks associated with AI use in higher education.
CCC said the expanded licence is intended to help institutions address what it describes as a “growing permissions gap” by enabling the authorised internal reuse of lawfully acquired copyrighted content within AI systems for purposes including summarisation, chatbot development, prompting, and research support.
Higher education institutions typically obtain scholarly and educational content through publisher subscriptions and individual article purchases. However, CCC noted that such agreements do not usually include permissions for AI-related uses, and negotiating separate AI rights with multiple publishers can be impractical for many institutions.
The ACLHE is a voluntary, non-exclusive collective licence that allows academic institutions to reuse text-based copyrighted content in course materials and, now, within AI systems to support teaching, learning, and research activities. The licence complements existing subscriptions and includes reuse rights for learning management systems, print and electronic course materials, library reserves and e-reserves, as well as internal AI applications.
CCC said the addition of AI reuse rights is intended to support institutions seeking to incorporate published copyrighted content, public domain materials, and internally generated content into AI-enabled workflows and research initiatives.
President and CEO Tracey Armstrong said: “Building on the subscriptions and lawful access to high-quality copyrighted content which colleges and universities already have, a consistent set of rights for internal-only use that in AI tools is essential in today’s environment.
“By adding internal-use AI reuse rights to the ACLHE, we are helping institutions address a growing permissions gap, expand the value of the license across campus, and support responsible AI use, accountability, and governance in teaching, learning, and research.”
Be first to read the lastest industry news and analysis!
