It spreads when small amounts of fecal matter from infected animals are ingested.<br \/>\u201cWhile activities like animal yoga can be enjoyable and beneficial, it\u2019s important for participants to understand the potential health risks associated with close contact with animals,\u201d said Dr. Chad Kingsley, district health officer for Northern Nevada Public Health. \u201cSimple precautions can significantly reduce the risk of illness.\u201d<br \/>Symptoms typically begin two to 10 days after infection and can last up to two weeks. The most common symptom is diarrhea, but symptoms can also include stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.<br \/>In some cases, the illness can be severe, most often in people with compromised immune systems.<br \/>Northern Nevada Public Health officials say there are steps people can take to reduce the risk of contracting cryptosporidiosis. They recommend thorough handwashing and using EPA-approved disinfectants when cleaning areas contaminated with animal fecal matter.<br \/>They also recommend avoiding kissing, cuddling or holding animals, and not eating, drinking or putting objects in your mouth in animal areas.<br \/>Farms and organizations that offer animal-based activities (such as animal yoga) can also take these steps:<br \/><i>Copyright 2026 KOLO via Gray Local Media, Inc.
