However a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/01\/trump-iran-war-hostilities-letter\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">ceasefire in the war<\/a> \u2013 launched by the United States and Israel in late February \u2013 has been in effect since 8 April, with one failed round of peace talks having taken place in Pakistan.<br \/>Iran\u2019s deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi told diplomats in Tehran \u201cthe ball is in the United States\u2019 court to choose the path of diplomacy or the continuation of a confrontational approach\u201d.<br \/>Iran, he said, was \u201cprepared for both paths\u201d.<br \/>Washington has repeatedly said it will not end the war without a deal that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2026\/apr\/26\/iran-nuclear-weapon-war-develop-one-now\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon<\/a>, the primary aim Trump cited when he launched strikes in February in the midst of nuclear talks. Iran says its nuclear program is peaceful.<br \/>Reuters and other news organisations have reported over the past week that Tehran is proposing to reopen the strait before nuclear issues are resolved.<br \/>Iranian media said Tehran\u2019s latest 14-point proposal included the withdrawal of US forces from areas surrounding Iran, lifting the US blockade on the strait of Hormuz, releasing Iran\u2019s frozen assets, payment of compensation, lifting sanctions and ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, as well as a new control mechanism for the strait.<br \/>Speaking to reporters in Florida on Saturday, Trump suggested new military action against Iran was on the table.<br \/>\u201cIf they misbehave, if they do something bad, but right now, we\u2019ll see,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s a possibility that could happen, certainly.\u201d<br \/>Elsewhere, the US warned shipping companies they could face sanctions for paying Iran to pass safely through the strait of Hormuz, adding pressure in the standoff over control of it.<br \/>Iran has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/apr\/30\/iran-supreme-leader-issues-defiant-statement-on-strait-of-hormuz\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">maintained a stranglehold on the strait<\/a> since the war began, choking major flows of oil, gas and fertiliser to the world economy.
