Apple TV+<\/a> has yet another must-watch hit on its hands with its new horror-comedy series Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em><\/a>, which critics have hailed as \u201csingular\u201d and \u201crefreshing.\u201d
The limited 10-episode series stars Matthew Rhys <\/a>as a small-town New England mayor desperate to boost tourism on his struggling island that locals are convinced is cursed. Dale Dickey, Kevin Carroll, Stephen Root, Kate O\u2019Flynn and Kingston Rumi Southwick also feature.
After premiering its first two episodes Wednesday, the show has already earned a coveted 100 percent score <\/a>on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Reviewers have singled out Rhys\u2019s \u201ctop-notch physical comedy\u201d as one of the show\u2019s greatest strengths, while also struggling to categorize the show within a specific genre, instead labeling it \u201csingular.\u201d
Lucy Mangan of The Guardian<\/em><\/a> found that \u201chorror may be its most obvious element, but it is so much more than that.\u201d Lauding it as \u201cintoxicating\u201d in a five-star review, Mangan likened it to Mare of Easttown<\/em> meets Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em>, \u201cbut with something else that makes it singular.\u201d
The London Times<\/em><\/a>\u2019s James Jackson agreed that \u201cit\u2019s more creepy than comical,\u201d adding, \u201cI don\u2019t think comedy is a helpful word in setting expectations.\u201d
\u201cSuch tonal shifts make Katie Dippold\u2019s show one peculiar barrel of fish, much in the way that Atlanta<\/em> or Barry <\/em>were uncategorizable,\u201d Jackson said in a four-star review.
Acknowledging that \u201ccomedy-horror might be a genre that\u2019s tricky to get right,\u201d RadioTimes<\/em><\/a>\u2019s Louise Griffin applauded Widow\u2019s Bay <\/em>as a \u201cneat, off-beat offering\u201d that \u201cgets that balance just right.\u201d
In her four-star review, Griffin praised the show\u2019s \u201ctwists, reveals and outright surreal moments.\u201d \u201cIn a sea of TV series competing to be the most cinematic production on the small screen, it\u2019s refreshing to see Apple TV invest in a small-town comedy that scales things right back,\u201d she continued.
Similarly, Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter <\/em><\/a>commended Rhys for \u201canchoring\u201d the \u201cintriguingly creepy, oddly cozy [and] unevenly effective horror-comedy.\u201d
\u201cAt its best, Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> highlights the blurry line between comedy and horror,\u201d Han added. \u201cBut if Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> excels at setting a tone of pervasive oddness … it\u2019s less reliable at converting that tension into catharsis.\u201d
Writing for Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>, David Fear said: \u201cThe show scratches the itch that both Castle Rock<\/em> and Welcome to Derry<\/em> couldn\u2019t seem to reach, yet Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> isn\u2019t interested in I.P. fan fiction.
\u201cThere\u2019s a glorious eccentricity that hovers over its blend of deadpan sitcom and spooky-tale dread, and a willingness to f*** with your head that harkens back to a different, less safe era of programming.\u201d
The first two episodes of Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> are streaming now on Apple TV+, with new episodes released every Wednesday through June 17, including a special two-episode drop on May 27.
