{"id":12538,"date":"2026-04-28T20:00:59","date_gmt":"2026-04-28T20:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/28\/american-workers-cant-afford-to-wait-on-federal-ai-legislation-groups-say-hr-dive\/"},"modified":"2026-04-28T20:00:59","modified_gmt":"2026-04-28T20:00:59","slug":"american-workers-cant-afford-to-wait-on-federal-ai-legislation-groups-say-hr-dive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/28\/american-workers-cant-afford-to-wait-on-federal-ai-legislation-groups-say-hr-dive\/","title":{"rendered":"American workers \u2018can\u2019t afford to wait\u2019 on federal AI legislation, groups say &#8211; HR Dive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                                                               Let HR Dive&#8217;s free newsletter keep you informed, straight from your inbox.                                                   <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than respecting states\u2019 authority to protect their own residents, the administration is doing the bidding of tech oligarchs,\u201d the groups said of the Trump administration.<br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>The letter was spearheaded by the progressive Economic Policy Institute, We Build Progress, the AFL-CIO Tech Institute and Workshop.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>In it, the groups noted that nearly two years have passed since the Bipartisan Senate AI Working Group released its <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schumer.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/Roadmap_Electronic1.32pm.pdf\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>roadmap for AI policy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>, \u201cbut the Senate has yet to consider comprehensive legislation.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>The groups called on the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jeffries.house.gov\/2025\/12\/09\/leader-jeffries-announces-new-house-democratic-commission-on-ai-and-the-innovation-economy\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>House Democratic Commission on AI and the Innovation Economy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>, which was formed in December, to ensure that federal reforms \u201ccenter the impacts of AI on workers.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>Leaders from the Senate and House AI groups could not immediately be reached for comment before press time.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>Meanwhile, the White House in March proposed <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/whitehouse-calls-minimally-burdensome-federal-ai-rules-trump\/815352\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>a national framework for regulating AI<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>, urging Congress to preempt conflicting state laws that could \u201cimpose undue burdens\u201d on companies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>The administration recommended Congress not create new federal rulemaking bodies for AI and rely instead on existing agencies and industry-led standards.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>President Donald Trump in December also issued an <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfodive.com\/news\/trump-ai-order-introduces-unstable-regulatory-landscape-analysis\/807977\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>executive order aiming to block some artificial intelligence laws<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> at the state level, a move called \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/president-trumps-ai-national-policy-executive-order-is-an-unambiguous-threat-to-states-beyond-just-ai\/\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>likely unconstitutional<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201d by critics.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cThe urgency of this moment is further compounded by the Trump administration\u2019s decision to prioritize corporate capture over the public good,\u201d the letter reads. \u201cThe administration has doubled down with a national AI legislative framework that would severely curtail states\u2019 ability to regulate AI.
